During House Republicans’ annual policy retreat held at Trump National Doral in Florida, President Donald Trump took the opportunity to discuss various issues, including his administration’s efforts to reduce drug prices. However, the spotlight of his remarks shifted momentarily to highlight the recent release of a documentary centred on First Lady Melania Trump.

The documentary, titled simply “Melania,” premiered for streaming on Amazon Prime on the same day as Trump’s address, 9th March. In his speech, President Trump expressed pride in both his political accomplishments and the premiere of his wife’s film, which explores her perspective during the lead-up to his second inauguration.

Trump recounted an anecdote about informing Melania of his satisfaction over their administration’s drug price reforms. “I went home and told our great first lady who’s now a movie star,” he stated. He enthusiastically described her film as “hot,” suggesting her cinematic debut had resonated with audiences. Additionally, he commented, “It was a good movie,” reflecting a husband’s pride in his wife’s new venture.

The film provides viewers with a behind-the-scenes look at the twenty days leading up to the 2021 inauguration, as seen through Melania’s experiences. The documentary first graced theatres on 30th January before making its way to streaming platforms, allowing a wider audience to engage with it.
Despite the enthusiasm from the President, the critical reception of “Melania” has been less than stellar. As of 10th March, the film held a mere 11% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes from critics, although this figure improved slightly from an earlier assessment of 8%. Conversely, audience reactions have been significantly more positive, with 98% of verified users rating the documentary favourably, although this drops to a modest 31% when unverified ratings are included. This disparity represents one of the largest divides between critic and audience scores in Rotten Tomatoes’ history.
While the film has garnered mixed reviews from critics, President Trump has been consistently supportive of Melania’s cinematic endeavours. In a prior interaction with reporters, he celebrated the documentary’s box office performance, noting its success during its opening weekend, where it grossed $7.04 million. Trump’s comments not only highlighted his pride in Melania’s achievements but also seemed to underscore the competitive dynamic within their family. “I always say it’s trouble because I always say there’s not room in one family for two stars,” he joked, emphasising the playful tension surrounding their respective public personas.
The documentary’s reception and its unique place in the cultural landscape have sparked varied discussions regarding Melania’s role as First Lady and her portrayal in the media. While critics have raised questions about the film’s substance and narrative depth, the positive audience feedback illustrates a different perspective, hinting at a successful connection with certain viewers.
As the discourse continues around both the documentary and the Trump administration’s policies, it remains to be seen how Melania will navigate her newfound spotlight as a public figure in the entertainment realm. Trump’s blend of political commentary and familial pride during the retreat encapsulated the couple’s intertwined public lives, as they continue to share their experiences in the national consciousness.
The ongoing dialogue about “Melania” not only reveals insights into the First Lady’s initiatives but also reflects broader trends in the way political figures engage with the arts and media, especially in an era where personal narratives become increasingly significant.
