A 12-year-old boy has sustained serious injuries after a skiing accident at a resort in Maine, marking a troubling incident for the popular winter sports destination. The accident happened at Black Mountain Resort in Rumford on Sunday, 8 March, when the young skier reportedly lost control and crashed.

The boy’s fall occurred while he was navigating the Allagash trail, which, according to local officials, had snow conditions that were hazardous. Deputy Chief Mike Arsenault of the Rumford Fire Department explained that the child appeared to have struck a rock concealed beneath the snow, causing him to lose his skis and slide off the trail into the woods at high speed.
Emergency crews were quickly on the scene, and following initial assessment, the child was transported to the on-site patrol room. He was then taken by Med-Care ambulance to Rumford Hospital for further treatment before being moved to a medical facility in Portland, where he remained in critical condition as of that evening.
“The warmer weather has changed the quality of the snow,” Deputy Chief Arsenault commented. “It creates conditions that are almost like skiing on ice, which can be particularly treacherous for skiers.” His remarks underscore the challenges posed by fluctuating weather, which can drastically affect skiing safety.
In a statement on social media, Black Mountain Resort expressed their deep concern for the injured boy. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of the young ski racer who was injured this morning skiing on the Allagash trail,” the resort said. They confirmed that after the ski patrol’s immediate response, the child received hospital care.
This unfortunate incident is the second serious skiing accident reported at the same resort in a little over a week. On 28 February, a nine-year-old girl suffered significant injuries during a skiing incident. Rescuers found her unconscious after what appeared to be a collision, and she was subsequently flown to a hospital for treatment.
Details about the prior accident reveal that emergency services were alerted by the girl’s sister, who recognised the severity of the situation. The resort’s ski patrol, like in the case of the recent incident, provided crucial support, assessing her condition and transporting her to the base area before she was taken to hospital.
Black Mountain Resort has reiterated its commitment to the safety and well-being of all guests, saying in their statement about the earlier incident, “Our thoughts are with them and their family.” They have not provided updates on the condition of either injured skier since the accidents occurred.
