In a heartwarming tale of resilience and friendship, two rescue dogs, Ben and Jerry, recently faced a series of challenges that ultimately ended in a joyous reunion. The canine brothers were both adopted by the same family from Paws Crossed Animal Rescue Inc., a New York-based organisation dedicated to finding loving homes for pets in need.

The story began when Jerry came home with his new family in February, having settled in nicely after his adoption. It quickly became apparent that Jerry missed his sibling, Ben, who had been fostered separately. In a touching turn of events, the family decided to bring Ben into their home as a foster-to-adopt pet, hoping to reunite the pair.
Bella Gillin, the rescue manager at Paws Crossed, explained the brothers’ dynamic: “Jerry is the more confident of the two, but he definitely encourages Ben to come out of his shell and take risks.” The family’s decision to adopt both dogs was not part of their original plan, yet it seemed destined to happen.
However, shortly after their reunion, the dogs were inadvertently separated once again. While out on a winter walk, one of Ben’s foster parents slipped on the ice and lost hold of the dog’s leash. This startling experience frightened Ben, prompting him to dash off into the frigid night, just a day prior to a severe snowstorm that would blanket the area in snow and bring dangerously low temperatures.
As the night wore on and Ben failed to return, his family grew increasingly worried. They reached out to Paws Crossed for assistance in the search. Fortunately, Ben was outfitted with a Fi GPS-enabled collar, which allowed the rescue organisation to track his location in real-time. By activating “Lost Dog Mode,” the collar provided precise data on Ben’s whereabouts, greatly aiding the search efforts.
Gillin highlighted the importance of the collar in their quest to find Ben: “Fi’s Lost Dog Mode allows you to share live tracking of the lost dog to allow multiple search party members to cover a wider area and pinpoint their exact location.” Using this technology, rescuers commenced their search in the area indicated by the collar, knowing that every minute counted.
When they arrived at Ben’s last known location, the rescuers worked with local residents to access their properties in search of the lost dog. To their relief, after a thorough search, Ben was discovered tucked away under an overturned wheelbarrow in a quiet backyard, shivering and attempting to shelter himself from the bitter cold.
“I saw the tiniest bit of his nose poking out from under the wheelbarrow,” Gillin recalled. “He’d found shelter there overnight, but he was terrified and freezing.” Luckily, Paws Crossed arrived just in time, ensuring that Ben was unharmed despite his ordeal. After a careful examination, the rescuers confirmed he was fit to return home.
Upon reuniting with his brother Jerry, Ben received a warm welcome that was both joyful and touching. “Jerry gave Ben a thorough inspection for any harm before pouncing on him to greet him with brotherly love!” Gillin described their reunion as a moment that undoubtedly filled all hearts present with warmth. Ben began to relax, reassured by the comforting presence of his brother.
Since coming home, Ben has enjoyed being pampered with blankets, treats, and the love of his family. Paws Crossed expressed their gratitude for the positive outcome of the situation, which serves as a heartening reminder of the joy rescue pets can bring to a household.
Gillin shared her insights on the transformative impact of adopting rescue dogs: “The patience you offer them is so valuable and life-changing. They have incredibly deep personalities and a desire to find comfort and companionship, and sometimes it takes time, but it’s so rewarding.”
In light of Ben and Jerry’s remarkable bond, she also encouraged potential adopters to consider adopting more than one dog. “I’d be remiss if I didn’t note that if you’re planning to adopt one, consider two!” she added, emphasising the special companionship that can exist between pets.
