A woman from Nottinghamshire is on a mission to locate a mysterious Good Samaritan who played a crucial role in rescuing her and her dog from a potentially life-threatening situation. Alexandra Szilvasi, 36, recounts the harrowing incident that occurred on February 23 when she and her ten-month-old spaniel mix, Snickers, ventured out for a day excursion to the quiet village of Gunthorpe.

The day began as a casual outing, with Szilvasi aiming to enjoy a change of scenery from their home in Bilborough. “I thought I’d take her down there for a pub lunch. It wasn’t supposed to be anything special,” she explained to the BBC. However, their trip turned into a frightening ordeal that neither she nor Snickers anticipated.
After strolling for about 40 minutes along the banks of the River Trent, Szilvasi decided to entertain Snickers by playing with a ball. Unfortunately, the ball rolled into the river, prompting the eager dog to leap in after it. “Snickers saw it and just did a big belly jump into the water,” Szilvasi recalled. However, to her dismay, the strong current quickly halted the dog’s progress, leaving Szilvasi fearing for Snickers’ safety.
Overcome with concern, Szilvasi, who does not possess swimming skills, made a split-second decision to descend a ladder into the frigid water. “I was about chest deep. I hooked both feet around the bottom of the ladder and leaned out as far as I could,” she described. As fortune would have it, Snickers resumed swimming just enough for Szilvasi to grasp her and draw her closer to the ladder.
Despite their close call, Szilvasi found herself in a precarious position; she was unable to ascend the ladder while simultaneously keeping hold of Snickers. They were trapped in the icy water for around five minutes before a man who had been fishing nearby noticed their plight and rushed to their aid. “I was in shock. I do feel like we maybe wouldn’t be here without him,” Szilvasi reflected on the unexpected rescue.
The Good Samaritan quickly took Snickers from Szilvasi’s grasp, enabling her to climb back to safety. However, in the chaos, Szilvasi did not manage to get his name before he departed. Now, she is determined to trace the man who helped her in her moment of need.
Expressing her gratitude, Szilvasi hopes to meet the man again in order to thank him properly. “We just really want to say thank you and take him out for a pint — or whatever he wants,” she said affectionately, acknowledging that the help provided may have saved both their lives.
Reflecting on her bond with Snickers, Szilvasi shared, “I always wanted a dog because they are great for your heart, great for everything. The house would be empty without her.” As she navigates the process of trying to find her rescuer, the ordeal has deepened her appreciation for both her pet and the act of kindness shown by a stranger.
