Jennifer Lopez has candidly reflected on her emotional struggles following her divorce from singer Marc Anthony in 2014. During her recent performance at her “Up All Night” residency in Las Vegas on 6th March, the multi-talented star shared poignant insights about an incredibly challenging period in her life. Lopez, who was married to Anthony from 2004 until their separation in 2011 and subsequent divorce three years later, opened up about the difficulties she faced as a single mother to their 18-year-old twins, Max and Emme.

While addressing the audience at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace, the 56-year-old singer revealed that she reached a point where she considered giving up entirely. “It was actually a really tough time,” she admitted, conveying her feelings of despair. “I was really about to give up on it all,” she added, stressing the emotional toll of raising two toddlers alone.

Amidst these challenges, Lopez drew strength from a piece of advice given to her by the late self-help author Louise Hay. Recalling their conversation, she shared how Hay likened life to dancing. “She said to me, ‘Jennifer, you’re a dancer, right?’” Lopez recalled. “And when you get the steps wrong, what do you do?” Hay’s uplifting message encouraged Lopez to persevere. “Always keep dancing,” is a mantra that Lopez now cherishes and hopes to inspire others with, telling her audience, “No matter what life throws at you, that you dance and you dance and you dance.”
This managing of personal struggles appears to have helped Lopez not only cope but also thrive professionally. In December 2022, she remarked during another residency performance that she began to excel at her craft after her divorce, a time she described as chaotic. Despite the emotional pitfalls of her split from Anthony, Lopez later praised him for the positive impact he had on her confidence throughout their marriage.
In an interview with Willie Geist for Sunday Today in late 2018, she acknowledged the invaluable support she received from Anthony during their time together. “While I was married to Marc, he really helped me with my confidence,” she expressed, recalling how he continually reinforced her abilities. “You’re a great singer. Don’t ever let anybody tell you you’re not a great singer,” was Anthony’s encouragement, which left a significant impression on Lopez.
The couple’s shared history, combined with their passion for music, has allowed them to reconnect in a collaborative way since their separation. Lopez recalled their experience working together on her Spanish-language album “Por Primera Vez.” While this partnership occurred several years after their divorce, Lopez revealed that it aided in mending certain rifts that had developed during their relationship. “It actually repaired certain parts of our relationship that had been fractured,” she shared in an interview for Spotify’s ¡Viva Latino! podcast in 2017.
For Lopez, music remains a central facet of her life, one that intertwines with her past experiences and personal growth. Their professional collaboration feels like a return to their roots, reminiscent of how they initially met: “We remembered that, like, oh right, we connect on this level of music,” she said.
Through the ups and downs that life has thrown her way, Lopez continues to embody resilience, using her platform to inspire others facing similar challenges. As she continues her Las Vegas residency, her journey reveals not only her triumphs but also her unwavering ability to “keep dancing,” no matter the circumstances.
