An eight-year-old boy from the Pittsburgh area has exceeded his ambitious goal of gathering 300 boxes of cereal for a local food pantry, receiving a tremendous outpouring of support from the community. Xander O’Brien’s initiative aims to assist The Bag Brigade, a volunteer effort focused on providing food security for students within the Belle Vernon Area School District.

Initially inspired by his mother Sarah O’Brien, who began volunteering with The Bag Brigade, Xander’s journey started with an innocent fascination for the act of packing food bags. These bags, filled with manageable and nutritious snacks such as mac and cheese cups, applesauce, and peanut butter, support 242 children each week during the school year. His mother has always been passionate about instilling in him the value of awareness regarding societal inequalities, particularly around food access.
Xander’s enthusiasm for volunteering blossomed when he participated in The Bag Brigade’s annual cereal box domino drop. Last year, his efforts contributed significantly, as he collected 150 boxes and had the honour of tipping the first box during the event, helping the organisation surpass its goal of 1,000 boxes.
This year, when it came time to organise a new collection drive, Xander set an even more ambitious target of gathering 300 cereal boxes—an objective he confidently aimed to surpass. Yet, the monumental response he received after his story was aired on local CBS affiliate KDKA-TV was beyond anyone’s expectations.
Following the broadcast, the O’Brien family’s home was inundated with deliveries, including a mountain of Amazon boxes that completely obscured their front door. The KDKA segment highlighted not just Xander’s efforts, but also shared Sarah’s Amazon wish list, which served to galvanise community members and encourage donations.
To date, Xander has successfully amassed over 1,100 cereal boxes, with plans to continue the drive until 15 March. His mother remarked on the importance of acknowledging that the contributions are directed to families within their own community, stating, “This is all staying in the Belle Vernon school district. So you’re feeding children within your own community.”
As the collection continues, the family reflects on Xander’s dedication and drive to support those in need. His father, Kevin O’Brien, noted that he anticipates an ongoing upward trajectory in future collection goals. “I’m sure every year the goal is going to go up,” he said. “So whatever we end at this year, I’m sure we’ll add 50 or 100 onto the end of that one.”
