Kiana Baron’s son, Nixon, recently embarked on his 4-H project, which involved raising an animal—a choice that unexpectedly led to him wanting to keep the pig, named Dave, as part of their family.

4-H is a well-known youth development programme in the United States, designed for children aged five to 19. Participants engage in a range of hands-on projects that teach valuable life skills. The programme is built around four core values of Head, Heart, Hands, and Health, symbolised by the four H’s. However, this particular project took a unique turn when Nixon declared that he could not bear to part with Dave after completing his project.

Kiana Baron shared her son’s story online, documenting their journey through various TikTok videos. In one candid clip, Kiana noted her son’s hesitation to follow the typical route of auctioning off his pig at the end of the project. Instead, Nixon had a plan of his own: to raise $500 to keep Dave at home.

To achieve his goal, Nixon set up a soda stand, creatively dubbed “Help Me Save Dave.” With enthusiasm and determination, he sought support from family, friends, and even kind-hearted strangers. The response was overwhelming. “Nixon managed to raise around $100 from his stand alone, and the rest came as donations,” Kiana revealed. Within a remarkably short period—just two days—Nixon not only met but exceeded his fundraising target, collecting a total of $510.

In a video celebrating his success, a delighted Nixon expressed his gratitude: “Thank you guys so much, I reached my goal. When I saw Dave, I knew he was the right one.” It instantly became clear that Dave was more than just a 4-H project; he had become a cherished member of the family.

Kiana initially had reservations about keeping a pig in their backyard. She confessed, “I didn’t want a pig (or two) living in my backyard anymore. Pigs are stinky, mess-makers.” However, it was apparent that Nixon’s bond with Dave was strong, prompting her to support his goal and allow him the chance to earn the money independently.

The family’s journey didn’t just stop with funding for Dave’s immediate care; Nixon has ambitious plans for his new pet. “He aims to earn more money to build Dave a nice shed with some air conditioning,” Kiana shared.
