In a poignant story of resilience and community spirit, ten-year-old Lydia from the Isle of Harris has faced a harrowing medical journey following a rare brain tumour diagnosis. The ordeal began last summer when Lydia’s parents took her for an eye test due to ongoing headaches and a noticeable tendency to tilt her head and favour one eye. The visit, which occurred while the family were travelling through Scotland in a campervan, led to the shocking discovery of fluid behind her eyes.

Following the initial eye examination, she was quickly referred to Forth Valley Hospital for a CT scan. The results revealed a substantial brain tumour, a traumatic diagnosis that took her family by surprise. “It was a massive shock to her entire family,” noted a representative from the Glasgow Children’s Hospital Charity. Soon after, Lydia was transported by ambulance to Glasgow, where medical professionals began immediate treatment to alleviate the pressure on her brain, followed by an additional surgery aimed at removing as much of the tumour as possible.
Lydia was diagnosed with a rare form of chondrosarcoma, a type of bone cancer that originates in the cartilage. The diagnosis necessitated extensive treatment, which included ten rounds of chemotherapy and 42 sessions of radiation therapy. Initially admitted to the Royal Hospital for Children in July 2025, Lydia spent over a month there, constantly under the watchful eyes of medical staff.

Throughout this challenging period, Lydia’s mother, Peigi, has highlighted her daughter’s extraordinary strength. “She has shown incredible courage and strength for a 10-year-old girl and has been through more in the last six months than some people go through in a lifetime,” remarked Peigi. The emotional toll on the family has been profound, yet they have managed to remain near Lydia, receiving support in the form of accommodation provided by the charity Crossbasket House, catering to families of children undergoing treatment.
The Harris community’s response to Lydia’s situation has been nothing short of inspiring. Friends and locals have rallied together, organising fundraising challenges such as “Legs Go for Lydia.” The inaugural event took place last September, where participants trekked the equivalent distance from Harris to Glasgow and back, culminating in an awards ceremony and raffle. Among the prizes was a large rainbow Highland cow teddy named “Hallie,” a gift meant to provide comfort and serve as a tangible connection to home for Lydia during her lengthy hospital stays.
The teddy’s story has caught the imagination of the community, and Peigi noted, “Hallie has become a bit of a local celebrity now, and almost everyone in the community has been involved in her various adventures!” This innovative idea not only acts as a source of comfort for Lydia but also helps children in the community feel connected to her journey.
Further efforts to raise funds have continued, with a second “Legs Go for Lydia” challenge taking place in January of this year. More than $2,000 was raised for charity through these initiatives, illustrating the community’s commitment to supporting Lydia and her family during such trying times.
Peigi expressed overwhelming gratitude for the support they have received, stating, “The generosity and kindness have been above and beyond what we could have ever imagined. We are so grateful to have such a caring and supportive community behind us.” As Lydia continues her fight against cancer, the solidarity of her community serves as a poignant reminder of the power of compassion and kindness in the face of adversity.
As Lydia remains focused on her recovery, her strength and the unwavering support from her family and community shine a light on hope and resilience—qualities that will undoubtedly aid her on this difficult journey. With ongoing treatments and the combined efforts of those around her, Lydia embodies the spirit of determination, reminding us all of the importance of community support in overcoming life’s challenges.
