A tragic incident at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park has resulted in the death of a 33-year-old local resident who entered a restricted area of the Kīlauea caldera on 26 February. According to the National Park Service (NPS), the man was discovered after a search and rescue operation was initiated in response to the emergency.

Officials reported that park personnel were deployed to the east side of the Kīlauea caldera, where the terrain is known to be steep and hazardous. The search effort involved navigating difficult conditions, with responders working through the night. On 27 February, the man was located and subsequently airlifted to Hilo Benioff Medical Centre. Sadly, he was declared dead shortly after arrival.
The NPS has chosen not to release the identity of the victim, respecting the family’s privacy during this difficult time. Authorities clarified that Kīlauea was not erupting at the moment of the incident, and an investigation into the circumstances surrounding his entry into the off-limits section of the park is underway.
This tragic incident is not an isolated case, as the park has faced similar occurrences in recent months. Last December, two individuals were captured on camera trespassing dangerously close to an eruption at Kīlauea. Earlier in June, a 30-year-old man from Boston sustained severe injuries when he fell approximately 30 feet from Byron Ledge Trail after straying too close to the cliff’s edge. Fortunately, he survived as a tree broke his fall; he had intended to get a better view of the eruption.
Following the latest incident, the NPS has issued warnings highlighting the dangers of Kīlauea caldera. The park service emphasised the presence of unstable cliff edges and hazardous volcanic features, urging visitors to adhere to all safety guidelines and remain within designated open areas to avoid such perilous situations.
