According to the West Valley City Police Department, nine students from Cyprus High School were riding in the SUV as it travelled east on a dirt road near the intersection of 4100 South and 8400 West at approximately 10:50 a.m. local time. In a sudden and unfortunate turn of events, the vehicle rolled over, resulting in the ejection of one student from the SUV.
Emergency services responded promptly to the scene but sadly declared the 15-year-old girl dead at the site of the crash. Preliminary investigations suggest that she may not have been wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident, raising concerns over vehicle safety among the young passengers.

Roxeanne Vainuku, deputy director of communications for the West Valley City Police Department, stated that the number of students in the vehicle raises questions about whether all individuals were properly secured with seatbelts. “There were nine kids in there, and so that tells you… just based on the number of seatbelts, whether everyone had a seatbelt or not,” she noted.
