In a heartwarming turn of events, five-year-old Levi Hillius has made an emotional return to his home in Idaho after a challenging seven-month battle with acute myeloid leukaemia (AML). His mother, Ashlie Hillius, has documented this poignant journey, which began in July when Levi was diagnosed with the aggressive form of cancer following a period of unusual fatigue.

Initially, Ashlie and her family believed Levi’s symptoms were minor. However, a visit to their paediatrician quickly escalated into a trip to the emergency room, where they received the life-altering diagnosis. “We left that night with just pajamas and a stuffed animal, fully expecting to return home the next day,” recalls Ashlie, who is a mother of four.

Regrettably, life took a sudden and harrowing turn for Levi and his family. Shortly after the diagnosis, he was life-flighted to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital for urgent treatment. “He never got to say goodbye to his toys, his siblings, or even our loved pets,” Ashlie remembers, reflecting on the abrupt shift in their lives. “One day, he was preparing to start kindergarten and the next, his entire world changed overnight.”

Levi faced intense treatments, spending many days in hospital for chemotherapy. The family found themselves in temporary accommodation while balancing hospital visits and appointments throughout the treatment. “His bone marrow transplant required a two-month stay where he was completely cut off from the outside world,” says Ashlie. During this isolating period, Levi had limited interactions with his family, spending most of his time in a hospital room focused on his health.

Despite the challenges of hospital life, Levi kept his spirits up with the help of LEGO sets, which his parents encouraged him to build daily. “We took care not to raise his hopes too much about returning home as the journey was highly unpredictable,” she explains. However, the day came when they could finally inform him that he was strong enough to return home. “His excitement was instantaneous, and he was eager to help us pack up,” Ashlie adds.

The emotional footage shared on Ashlie’s TikTok account captures the family’s return home. The joy on Levi’s face as they drive back into their neighbourhood is palpable, with his ecstatic cries of “I’m so happy” resonating with viewers online. “Arriving back home felt like finally being able to exhale,” Ashlie describes. Just the night before Levi was taken to the hospital, Ashlie had been preparing for a family trip to Disneyland, a stark contrast to the turbulent journey that followed.

Upon stepping inside their home, Levi immediately bolted towards the custom bunk bed his father had constructed for him before his diagnosis. “He had dreamed of that bed during our time away,” Ashlie explains. He was also eager to reunite with their family dog and chickens, highlighting the simple joys he had missed.

Though Levi is currently in remission, Ashlie emphasizes that their journey is not yet over. “We continue to monitor him closely following his bone marrow transplant, requiring regular bi-weekly trips from Idaho to Memphis for check-ups,” she reveals. Soon, he will receive a donor cell boost to help maintain his remission. Despite ongoing challenges, being able to return home means everything to their family.

Throughout her son’s ordeal, Ashlie has become an advocate for bone marrow donation, urging others to consider joining the registry. “Levi is alive today because a stranger made the choice to donate bone marrow,” she explains. “A single decision can profoundly influence someone else’s future.”
