Kalei Martin, a resident of Sacramento, has become a poignant advocate for colorectal cancer awareness, particularly focusing on its impact among younger adults. Her journey, which began after experiencing alarming health symptoms shortly after the birth of her second child, highlights the urgency of recognising and addressing health concerns promptly.

At just 28, Kalei was swept into a series of distressing health issues, starting with severe stomach pains and bleeding. Initially attributing her symptoms to post-pregnancy changes, she soon realised something was amiss when her condition intensified. Despite documenting her symptoms, including unusual tissue-like material during bathroom visits, medical professionals initially dismissed her concerns.

In her efforts to seek medical help, Kalei faced significant challenges. After enduring weeks of increasing symptoms, she finally visited her primary care physician. Following blood tests and a rectal examination, she was reassured that she wasn’t anaemic and was likely suffering from a non-threatening condition, such as an internal haemorrhoid. However, as her pain mounted, she found herself in the emergency department, where her symptoms were again overlooked. The dismissive attitude of the staff only added to her frustration, leaving Kalei feeling unheard and anxious about her health.
Determined to find answers, Marble took it upon herself to contact a gastroenterology department for immediate assistance. This proactive decision led to a colonoscopy, which ultimately revealed the devastating diagnosis: stage 2 colorectal cancer. The reality of her condition was a shock, especially for a healthy 28-year-old mother of two. The diagnosis highlighted a situation that many doctors often overlook—a young woman experiencing serious gastrointestinal symptoms.
Kalei’s treatment journey began with an aggressive approach consisting of 25 rounds of pelvic radiation coupled with chemotherapy. The toll on her health was immense; however, she remained committed to maintaining normalcy for her young daughters, aged 1 and 3 at the time. Despite the struggle, she found strength in the support of her family, especially her husband, who stepped up to care for their children during her treatment.
After completing her care, Kalei received the hopeful news that her tumour had dissolved, leading her to be classified as having “no evidence of disease.” She was placed on a watchful waiting plan but soon faced another hurdle when scans revealed lung nodules that escalated her diagnosis to stage 4 colorectal cancer. Despite the grim news, Kalei underwent surgery to remove affected lung tissue, once again demonstrating remarkable resilience.
Her journey prompted Kalei to become a vocal advocate for awareness surrounding colorectal cancer, especially among younger populations. She began sharing her experiences on social media, where her candid discussions about her symptoms and treatment resonated with many. Several individuals reached out to her, sharing similar health concerns and expressing gratitude for her willingness to spotlight the issue.
Kalei’s assertion that colorectal cancer is now the leading cause of cancer-related deaths among those under 50 underscores the critical need for increased awareness and action. As she encourages others to advocate for their health, she reflects on her own initial ignorance of colorectal cancer prior to her diagnosis. Kalei’s aim is to inspire young adults to recognise their bodies’ signals and seek timely medical evaluation.
Currently, Kalei is under careful monitoring, and although some recent scans have raised concerns, she has received encouraging updates, including a negative blood test indicating no immediate risk of relapse. This development has brought a renewed sense of hope for her and her family, allowing them to move forward with optimism.
In her own words, Kalei emphasises the importance of being attuned to one’s body and the necessity of asking questions within the healthcare space. She firmly believes in the power of advocacy, urging others to prioritise their health and to speak up when something feels wrong. Above all, her faith serves as a guiding light through her challenges, providing her with peace and resilience amid uncertainty.
Through sharing her story, Kalei Martin reminds us of the vital importance of awareness and self-advocacy when it comes to health, especially for younger individuals who may overlook symptoms that could indicate serious conditions like colorectal cancer.
