Christina Applegate, the acclaimed Emmy-winning actress, has been open about her health struggles since revealing her diagnosis of multiple sclerosis (MS) in August 2021. Applegate’s journey towards diagnosis began years prior; she noted that symptoms had manifested as early as 2014. In a post on social media, she candidly expressed the challenges she faced, stating, “It’s been a strange journey. But I have been so supported by people that I know who also have this condition.” The actress found her condition particularly challenging, highlighting the emotional turmoil that often accompanies the unpredictability of MS—an autoimmune disease that damages the protective sheath surrounding nerve fibres in the central nervous system.

Following her diagnosis, Applegate was forced to reevaluate her career and her life. Her condition progressed quickly, so much so that by the time filming resumed for the final season of *Dead to Me*, she required the assistance of a wheelchair to move around the set. This change prompted Applegate to take a significant step back from acting, focusing instead on her podcast, *MeSsy*, which she co-hosts with fellow actress Jamie-Lynn Sigler, who also has MS. Additionally, Applegate launched *Next in MS*, an online platform fostering support and community among those battling the disease.
Reflecting on her health journey in her upcoming memoir, *You With the Sad Eyes*, Applegate emphasised the hardships she has faced, noting the “excruciating” pain that often defines her day-to-day existence. Sharing her experiences with others who may be struggling, she spoke candidly about her life post-diagnosis: “My life isn’t wrapped up with a bow. People’s lives, sorry for lack of a better term, f—ing suck sometimes.”
On November 14, 2022, Applegate made her first public appearance following her diagnosis, attending a ceremony to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. She was assisted by a cane and made a poignant statement regarding her journey, remarking, “I don’t say that I have friends, I have family. These people take care of me.” During the event, she also injected humour, showcasing her spirit as she quipped about her condition by showing off a manicure with the letters spelling “f u MS.”
However, as she navigated life with MS, Applegate admitted to the adjustment challenges that came with her new reality. “Now my life is a different story,” she stated. There is a sense of mourning for her previous self, but she remains hopeful that she might still contribute to the industry, reiterating her willingness to produce projects in the future.
In a surprise appearance at the 2024 Emmy Awards, where she presented the award for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy, Applegate received a heartfelt standing ovation. Her emotional response underscored the deep affection and respect her peers hold for her. “I felt really beloved, and it was really a beautiful thing,” she later commented during an interview on *Good Morning America*.
The frankness with which Applegate discusses her illness has resonated with many, revealing the profound reality of living with a debilitating condition. She described daily challenges including limitations in mobility and constant pain, with around 30 lesions found on her brain due to MS. In candid moments, she reflected on the severity of her experience, stating, “I live kind of in hell. I’m not out a lot, so this is a little difficult.”
Despite the immense difficulties, Applegate finds comfort in her routine, often spending her days in bed due to the intense pain she experiences. She has made it a priority to take her daughter, Sadie, to school each day, cherishing those small moments of normalcy and connection amidst her struggles.
As she launches her memoir, Applegate hopes to share her life story authentically, exploring not only her battle with MS, but also her upbringing and career. She remarked, “We all have come from somewhere, some places more painful than others, and it’s what you do with it, I guess.” While she stresses that her memoir is not an inspirational book, she believes it may nonetheless inspire others facing their own hardships.
Through her vulnerability and dedication to raising awareness, Christina Applegate continues to shine a light on the realities of MS, encouraging compassion and understanding for those living with chronic illness. Her ongoing journey is a testament to resilience in the face of adversity, serving as an inspiration to fans and individuals alike.
