Rustan shared the heartbreaking news on his Instagram account on 2nd March, revealing that Sugar has undergone surgery to remove a tumour. As her condition has prompted concerns about her remaining time, he decided to establish a GoFundMe page to raise financial support for her current medical treatments. These costs encompass everything from veterinary visits and medical equipment to specialized food to aid her recovery.
“Sugar has brought so much joy to so many,” Rustan expressed in his post, emphasising the profound impact the dog has had not only on his life but on the lives of countless others. He announced plans for a special beach day with Sugar, where community members can gather to witness her ride what may be her final waves. He hinted that this poignant event could take place around 7th or 8th March.
Rustan spoke candidly to local news outlet Fox 11, shedding tears as he acknowledged the grim prognosis: “She has only maybe a very short time.” Despite the sadness, he took a moment to reflect on Sugar’s remarkable achievements throughout her life. With a record of 19 titles, including five World Dog Surf Championships, Sugar has shown the world what dogs are capable of in the sport of surfing.
