In a recent interview, actor and singer Billy Porter spoke candidly about his near-death experience stemming from a severe case of urosepsis. The 56-year-old entertainer, best known for his role in “Pose” and for his groundbreaking performances on Broadway, described the incident as a terrifying brush with mortality that has profoundly changed his outlook on life.

Porter’s health crisis began unexpectedly when he visited his doctor for what he thought was a routine check-up in September 2025. During this visit, medical professionals discovered that he had a kidney stone lodged in his urethra, which subsequently triggered a severe infection. “When they got in there, there was so much pus, and bile, and infection behind the stone. It bubbled up and I went uroseptic in minutes,” Porter recounted on the podcast “Outlaws,” hosted by TS Madison.
Urosepsis is a serious condition that arises from untreated urinary tract infections that spread to the kidneys. While details about Porter’s illness had initially surfaced in a press release announcing his withdrawal from a production of “Cabaret” on Broadway, the full gravity of his situation only became clear during his recent revelations.
Following the onset of urosepsis, Porter was placed on an ECMO machine, a form of life support designed to provide oxygen to the body when the lungs are unable to do so. Reflecting on this daunting period, he stated, “I was dead for three days. I am a miracle. I’m a walking miracle.” His condition was so critical that doctors later informed him he experienced compartment syndrome in his leg, a serious complication that necessitated emergency surgery while he remained in a coma.
“They had to cut me open on either side of my leg, leaving it open for two days to save my leg,” he explained, underscoring the severity of his hospitalization. Porter has expressed immense gratitude for his recovery, declaring, “I am so grateful to be here. It is such a gift.” This experience has only strengthened his resolve to lead a purposeful life.
As a result of his health scare, Porter has adopted a new perspective on both his career and personal life. “While I was in my hospital bed, I heard several clarion calls: ‘Work smarter, not harder,’ ‘Be obedient and answer the call,’ and ‘Don’t you ever stop telling the truth again,'” he shared, revealing how the ordeal has transformed his priorities.
In the months since his hospitalisation, Porter has kept his fans updated on his recovery journey. In December, he took to social media to express the challenges he has faced, noting, “It was not easy. It’s been a very, very challenging four months. And I want everybody to know that I am on the road to a full recovery. I’m not there yet, but I am on the road to that.” He also took the opportunity to thank those who supported him during this dark time, acknowledging that he felt every prayer sent his way.
Porter’s willingness to speak openly about his health challenges highlights not only his vulnerability but also his strength. His journey is a testament to resilience in the face of adversity—a sentiment that resonates with many.
As he continues to navigate his recovery, Porter remains committed to fulfilling his role as an artist and advocate. His story serves as a reminder of the fragility of health and the importance of listening to one’s body, making adjustments, and prioritising well-being above all.
Fans and supporters of Billy Porter can expect to witness his return to form as he shares his talents and insights moving forward. The experience of battling urosepsis may have reshaped his approach to life, but it has also intensified his passion for storytelling and truth-telling, which he intends to maintain in all future endeavours.
