In a notable escalation of military responses, United States Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth provided a comprehensive update on the situation in Iran during a press conference on March 4. Kicking off the briefing, Hegseth declared that U.S. and Israeli forces were “only just starting to hunt, dismantle, demoralise, destroy and defeat” Iranian military capabilities.

Hegseth, who has controversially rebranded his department as the “Department of War,” claimed that four days into the operation, the outcomes had been “incredible” and “historic.” He stated, “Only the United States of America could lead this, but when you add the Israeli defence forces—a devastatingly capable force—the combination is sheer destruction for our radical Islamist Iranian adversaries.”

One of the more startling claims made during the briefing was that a recent U.S. operation resulted in the assassination of an individual allegedly plotting to kill former President Donald Trump. “We’ve known for a long time that Iran had intentions on trying to kill President Trump and/or other US officials,” Hegseth said. He noted that while this was not the primary aim of their operations, he ensured that those responsible were included on the target list.

The Secretary’s statements suggested that the U.S. military is prepared to go to extreme lengths in this conflict. Following the death of six American service members in a drone strike in Kuwait, Hegseth vowed to “avenge” the fallen. Four of the victims have been identified as Capt. Cody A. In his remarks, Trump condemned the Iranian regime for its longstanding anti-American rhetoric and actions. “For 47 years, the Iranian regime has chanted death to America and waged an unending campaign of bloodshed and mass murder,” said Trump.

Regional allies, including Kuwait, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates—homes to American military installations—reported intercepting missiles aimed at U.S. assets.
