Netflix has announced that it will launch its much-anticipated adaptation of *Little House on the Prairie* this summer, with the series set to debut on 9th July 2026. The streaming giant also revealed that it has already renewed the show for a second season, indicating strong confidence in its potential.

Showrunner Rebecca Sonnenshine expressed her gratitude to the cast and crew in a recent statement, highlighting their dedication and effort in bringing the first season to fruition. She stated, “I’m incredibly grateful to our wonderful cast and crew, who put their hearts and hard work into making our first season come alive.” Sonnenshine also shared her enthusiasm for introducing a new version of the beloved series to audiences, emphasising that this adaptation aims to explore the rich narratives found within Laura Ingalls Wilder’s semi-autobiographical books.
The announcement came more than a year after Netflix first disclosed its plans to adapt Wilder’s works in January 2025, a project that had been discussed in various capacities over several years. The streaming platform recently offered a glimpse of what viewers can expect through an initial image showcasing the iconic Ingalls sisters enjoying a moment alongside a covered wagon.
Jinny Howe, the head of scripted series for Netflix in the US and Canada, described the new series as “beautiful” and expressed delight at its early renewal. Howe praised the outstanding work of the cast and crew, saying, “The exceptional work by Rebecca Sonnenshine and the entire cast and crew on season 1 has established a rich foundation of storytelling for years to come.” The series aims to encompass a blend of heartfelt family drama, survival adventure, and the origins of the American frontier.
Among the talented cast members, Alice Halsey will portray Laura Ingalls, while Skywalker Hughes takes on the role of her older sister, Mary. Luke Bracey is set to play Laura’s father, Charles Ingalls, and Crosby Fitzgerald will embody her mother, Caroline Ingalls. Some of the cast members were announced back in May 2025, adding to the anticipation surrounding the project.
According to Netflix, this adaptation will offer a “kaleidoscopic view” of the challenges and achievements of those who played pivotal roles in shaping the American frontier. Executive producers for the show include Sonnenshine, Joy Gorman Wettels, Dana Fox, Susanna Fogel, and Trip Friendly, with CBS Studios and Anonymous Content involved in production.
This new version of *Little House on the Prairie* comes more than 40 years after the original series concluded on NBC in 1983. The beloved programme aired for nine seasons, beginning in 1973, and featured a renowned cast including Melissa Gilbert, Michael Landon, and Karen Grassle among others.
While fans of the original series have speculated whether any of the original cast might make appearances in the new adaptation, there has been no confirmation from Netflix regarding their involvement. Notably, Alison Arngrim, who portrayed the character Nellie Oleson, previously remarked that she is “just the right age to play Mrs. Oleson,” though she later confirmed in another interview that, as far as she knows, the original cast is not returning.
During a recent Q&A session celebrating the 50th anniversary of the original show, Trip Friendly, along with his daughter Rebecca, expressed their admiration for Halsey, lauding her maturity and talent at such a young age. “She just turned 11 years old, and she is so mature, so talented,” Rebecca stated enthusiastically.
Original series star Melissa Gilbert also offered her insights into the remake, suggesting it will adhere more closely to Wilder’s original writings compared to its predecessor. She mentioned, “There’s a lot of information and beautiful stories to mine from the actual writings of *Little House*,” emphasising that there are countless characters and tales within the *Little House* universe yet to be explored.
