In a remarkable turn of events, a two-year-old Irish setter named Marigold has made headlines after giving birth to a staggering 17 puppies during a lengthy 13-hour labour. This extraordinary occurrence took place in England and has left both Marigold and her owner, Miranda Pellecchia, navigating the challenges of caring for such a large litter.

The remarkable delivery began on January 2, shortly after 11 a.m., when Marigold delivered her first puppy. Pellecchia, who resides near Canterbury and works as a mediator in special educational needs, revealed that they had anticipated a sizeable litter, but they were nonetheless astonished by how many puppies followed. “Just when we thought it was all over, out would pop another one,” she recounted, highlighting the intensity of the situation.
The effort required to care for 17 puppies has turned into a full-time commitment for Pellecchia. To keep her energy up and ensure she could provide adequate milk for her pups, Marigold has reportedly been consuming as much as 12 tins of dog food each day. “What with the feeding, because they needed extra formula milk, weighing, and general care and attention, I’ve not been getting much sleep,” she explained, illustrating the demanding nature of the past few weeks.
Pellecchia also shared her humorous side, stating that she “thought it would never stop” as the puppies continued to arrive. The birth concluded around midnight, with the excitement of each newborn leaving both Mareigold and Pellecchia on their toes. “Even when the 17th was born, we wondered if that really would be the last,” Pellecchia recalled, adding, “It was exhausting for us, so I dread to think how poor Marigold felt.”
Despite the exhausting ordeal of the labour, both dog and owner have shown resilience. Pellecchia reassured everyone that Marigold has been recovering well, although initially, the dog “wouldn’t go to sleep properly for days” as she tended to her new family. Pellecchia supported Marigold throughout the process, staying up late to ensure everything was going smoothly.
While it has certainly been a period of chaos for Pellecchia, she affectionately mentioned that even the smallest pup, often referred to as the ‘runt of the litter’, is thriving. “I reckon things are just set to return to the level of chaos we normally have around here,” she stated with a smile.
This record-breaking event has surpassed the previous record for the largest documented Irish doodle litter, which stood at 16 puppies, born to a dog named Amelia in Hampshire back in 2019. It’s clear that this new milestone is noteworthy in the canine community.
Looking ahead, Pellecchia has plans for her extensive brood once the puppies are old enough to be rehomed. She mentioned that she intends to sell each puppy at a price of £1,300, which is approximately $1,500, and she has already received considerable interest from prospective buyers. While she feels bittersweet about the thought of parting with the adorable pups, she acknowledged the overwhelming nature of their care.
“Obviously, we’re going to miss them because they’re adorable,” Pellecchia remarked. “But I’m also looking forward to getting my life back because it’s been enormously demanding.” With thoughts of easing back into a more manageable routine, Pellecchia reflects on the joy brought by Marigold and her remarkable litter.
