Renowned musician Paul McCartney is set to delve into the past as he explores the highs and lows of his post-Beatles era with the band Wings. The 82-year-old icon has revealed plans for a new book that will shed light on the journey of the hitmaking group, expected to be released this autumn. Titled “Wings: The Story of a Band on the Run” and edited by historian Ted Widmer, the book will provide an in-depth look at the band’s rise to fame and their significant influence on the music scene after the Beatles.
Formed in 1971 by McCartney and his wife Linda McCartney, Wings saw various talented members come and go over the years, including guitarist Denny Laine and drummer Denny Seiwell. The band soared to success with hit albums like “Band on the Run” (1973), “Venus and Mars” (1974), and “At the Speed of Sound” (1976). Their chart-topping tracks such as “Live and Let Die,” “Band on the Run,” and “Silly Love Songs” remain classics to this day.
“Wings: The Story of a Band on the Run” is a 528-page oral history that delves into the behind-the-scenes moments of the band, featuring never-before-seen photographs and insights from McCartney and other key members of the group. McCartney expressed his enthusiasm for revisiting the wild adventures of Wings, reminiscing, “Starting from scratch after The Beatles felt crazy at times. There were some very difficult moments, and I often questioned my decision. But as we got better, I thought, ‘OK, this is really good.'”
Reflecting on the band’s evolution, McCartney highlighted how Wings proved their worth as a formidable musical force. He shared, “We proved Wings could be a really good band, to play to huge audiences in the same way the Beatles had and have an impact in a different way. It was a huge buzz.” The announcement of the book coincides with a series of tributes to Wings, including the release of a restored edition of their studio performance film “One Hand Clapping” in 2024.
As fans anticipate the 50th-anniversary edition of “Venus and Mars” in March and an upcoming documentary on McCartney’s solo career, the publication of “Wings: The Story of a Band on the Run” adds another dimension to celebrating the band’s legacy. Widmer described the book as “a landmark account of Paul McCartney’s triumphant musical reinvention in the 1970s and the subsequent rise of one of the decade’s most iconic bands.”
