A Virginia woman has garnered widespread praise for her courageous act of heroism after rescuing two young boys from a devastating apartment fire, following a day of chemotherapy treatment. Jerkesha Petty, who resides in Colonial Heights, displayed remarkable bravery during an emergency situation on February 27.

Petty had recently undergone her 232nd session of chemotherapy for breast cancer. Upon returning home, she fell asleep, only to be abruptly awakened by the sound of a fire alarm. Realising that a neighbouring apartment was ablaze, Petty instinctively sprang into action. “I looked across and I looked at the door, and there was smoke coming from out of the top of the door,” she recounted. Despite her physical exhaustion from cancer treatment, the urgency of the situation propelled her to run towards the flames.
Upon reaching the neighbouring home, Petty quickly assessed the situation and spotted one of the two boys trapped inside. The sight she encountered was alarming, as she described the kitchen engulfed in flames. “I could see straight through the kitchen, and it was just flames everywhere,” Petty explained. It was evident to her that time was of the essence, and she knew she had to act swiftly to save the children.
Without hesitation, Petty managed to guide both boys to safety outside of the burning building. However, her efforts did not stop there. She returned to the fire and used three separate fire extinguishers in an attempt to contain the flames. “I just knew that they needed to get out of the residence and that the fire needed to be put out,” she said. Her quick thinking and determination significantly reduced the potential for further injury or property damage.
The fire department dispatched crews to the scene soon after the alarm was raised. Petty was treated for smoke inhalation due to her efforts in battling the fire but was later released from the hospital. Fortunately, the treatment did not prevent her from receiving recognition for her bravery.
On February 27, the Colonial Heights Fire Department honoured Jerkesha Petty with a certificate acknowledging her heroic actions. The award ceremony was a heartfelt recognition of her courage and selflessness during such a challenging time. In addition to the certificate, Petty was gifted a new fire extinguisher—a practical token of appreciation for her lifesaving efforts.
Battalion Chief Geoff Turner of the Colonial Heights Fire Department commented on Petty’s actions, stating, “She was at the right place, at the right time, and she was already fighting a battle of her own.” His sentiments reflect the extraordinary nature of her response amidst her personal health struggles.
The outpouring of gratitude towards Petty has touched many, highlighting the power of one individual’s courage in the face of adversity. As she now celebrates being cancer-free, her heroic act serves as a reminder of the strength that can emerge during challenging times.
