A hiker is currently recuperating in hospital following a harrowing fall in Pine Creek Canyon, Las Vegas, on Saturday, 28 February 2026. Reports indicate that the individual plunged between 40 to 50 feet while climbing, sustaining serious head and back injuries in the process. Authorities believe that the hiker’s helmet played a crucial role in preventing a more severe outcome, despite being damaged during the fall.

According to a statement released by the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, the incident was reported around midday. The hiker, who has not yet been publicly identified, was navigating the Dream Safari route on the Dark Shadows Wall when the accident occurred. Initial assessments suggested that the injuries sustained were severe but manageable given the circumstances.
In a commendable display of teamwork, the hiker’s climbing partner, along with a nearby guide, quickly reached the scene. They provided assistance by controlling the bleeding while waiting for emergency services to arrive, demonstrating the critical importance of prompt action in such incidents.
A rescue operation was subsequently launched that spanned an exhausting seven hours. The hiker was located approximately 600 feet from the canyon floor, sitting at the top of the first pitch of their climbing route. The rescue efforts were complicated by the rugged terrain, necessitating the deployment of multiple search and rescue teams.
Members of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department’s Search and Rescue team utilised their helicopter unit, AIR3, to access the area above the injured climber. A volunteer lead climber and four search and rescue officers were inserted from the helicopter several hundred feet above the hiker to commence the rescue.
Once on the scene, the rescue team administered medical aid and secured the injured climber onto a titanium stretcher, renowned for its lightweight properties, facilitating easier transport. To ensure a safe descent, the team established three separate lowering stations to transport the individual down to the canyon floor.
Upon reaching the base of the climbing route, the hiker’s care continued as additional volunteers from the Lead Climb and Mountain Rescue teams aided in moving the stretcher to an appropriate extraction point. Coordination among the various rescue teams was crucial in ensuring the hiker received immediate medical attention.
The extraction was then completed by the AIR3 helicopter, which returned to the site to carry both the hiker and the rescue personnel to safety. The operation showcased not only the bravery of the rescue teams but also the effectiveness of their training when responding to emergencies in challenging environments.
While the hiker remains under observation at a local hospital, their injuries are reported to be serious but treatable.
