A British teenager has revealed how undergoing a hair transplant at the age of 16 transformed her life and helped her combat long-held insecurities. Yasmine, now 18, spoke candidly to PEOPLE about her decision to travel to Turkey for the procedure, a choice driven by her struggles with self-image stemming from her forehead shape.

In her interview, Yasmine explained how the appearance of her forehead significantly impacted her mental well-being. She described how it affected her interactions with others, leading her to avoid photographs and to feel uncomfortable in social situations. These feelings of insecurity plagued her for years, ultimately motivating her to seek a solution.
“I felt genuinely affected by how my forehead looked,” she stated, reflecting on her decision to pursue cosmetic surgery. Given the opportunity to address her concerns, Yasmine seized the chance to have a hair transplant, viewing it as a means to ‘fix’ her appearance and alleviate her worries.
Although originally from Nottingham, Yasmine chose to travel to Istanbul, a city renowned for its affordable cosmetic procedures. She noted that Turkey stood out as the “best option” due to its popularity as a destination for medical tourism. The total cost of her hair transplant amounted to £1,110, which included all essentials such as accommodation, transportation, and aftercare, a stark contrast to the prices in the UK where hair transplants can range from £1,110 to £30,000.
The procedure itself involved transplanting approximately 3,000 hair grafts, meticulously taken from the back of her head after it was shaved. The grafts were then implanted at the front to create a more balanced hairline. Yasmine spent around seven hours at the clinic and described the nature of the experience as intensive but worthwhile.
Patience has been a critical aspect of Yasmine’s hair growth journey. Initially, she had to endure a shedding phase, where the new hairs fell out as they were not yet strong enough to remain. However, she expressed satisfaction with the outcome, stating that over time her hair became thicker and naturally beautiful. “Now that I’m over a year post-op, the results are amazing,” she said, highlighting the transformative nature of the procedure.
Medical experts, such as Dr Tracy Evans, a certified dermatologist from the United States, endorse elective surgeries like hair transplants for those over 18. According to Dr Evans, young individuals should wait until they reach this age to decide if such procedures suit them, as recovery can involve a considerable wait for hair growth, which could impact a young person’s mental health.
Yasmine experienced only mild discomfort following the surgery, with tightness around her head but no significant complications. She indicated that her healing process proceeded normally, and now, her confidence has soared. “The surgery has changed my entire life. Before the transplant, I hated how I looked, and my mental health was in a really bad place,” she reflected.
With newfound confidence and a sense of happiness, Yasmine feels as though she can finally live without the shadows of insecurity that once overshadowed her life.
