In a recent development in the case surrounding the death of beloved Friends star, Matthew Perry, it has emerged that Salvador Plasencia, one of the medical doctors charged in connection with Perry’s passing, has claimed innocence. Perry tragically passed away at the age of 54 in October 2023 due to an accidental overdose of ketamine, after battling addiction for over twenty years. The case has now resurfaced with the release of Peacock’s new documentary, “Matthew Perry: A Hollywood Tragedy”.
The documentary sheds light on the circumstances leading up to Perry’s untimely demise and the legal proceedings that followed. Former United States Attorney for the State of California Central District, Martin Estrada, who initially spearheaded the investigation, emphasised a shift in approach from blaming victims to holding drug dealers and sellers accountable for taking advantage of individuals grappling with addiction issues resulting in death or serious harm.
The documentary revealed that medical doctors Salvador Plasencia and Mark Chavez were among the individuals charged in connection with providing ketamine to Matthew Perry. While Chavez has pled guilty to one count of conspiracy to distribute ketamine and is cooperating with authorities, Plasencia, on the other hand, entered a not-guilty plea and is facing multiple charges, including conspiracy to distribute ketamine, distribution of ketamine, and altering/falsifying documents.
Plasencia’s attorney, Stefan Sacks, defended his client’s actions by stating that Plasencia was genuinely trying to provide medical care to help alleviate Perry’s struggles. Sacks argued that Plasencia was unaware of Perry obtaining ketamine from other sources initially and ceased his involvement upon suspecting other activities. However, the prosecution, led by Martin Estrada, presented evidence suggesting that Plasencia was fully aware of the risks and the financial gain associated with his actions.
Estrada highlighted instances where Plasencia reportedly set exorbitant prices for ketamine, indicating a predatory intent to exploit Perry’s vulnerabilities for monetary profit. Despite red flags and warnings, Plasencia allegedly continued to supply the drug to Perry, ultimately leading to the tragic outcome. The prosecutor contended that Plasencia and others involved prioritised greed over ethical medical practices, disregarding the well-being and safety of their patients.
