Everclear Frontman Art Alexakis Says His MS ‘Isn’t Progressing’ and ‘There’s Hope’ 10 Years After Diagnosis

Art Alexakis, the frontman of the iconic rock band Everclear, has opened up about his ongoing battle with multiple sclerosis (MS) and how a new treatment has reinvigorated his life and career. Currently on the road for the band’s 30th anniversary tour of their beloved album “Sparkle and Fade,” the 63-year-old singer is optimistic about his health and the future.

In an interview with PEOPLE, Alexakis expressed a growing sense of hope regarding his condition, which he has managed since being diagnosed with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis in 2016. The use of TYSABRI, an immunomodulator, has significantly improved his symptoms. “Everything gets a little bit harder with MS,” he admitted. “But I do celebrate the fact that I still can do the things I do, in large part because of my treatment.”

TYSABRI functions by modulating the immune response without completely shutting it down, blocking the white blood cells that could potentially transport the disease to his brain and spine. Alexakis shared that since beginning this treatment, his MS has remained stable. “It’s not progressing, or if it’s progressing, it’s minute,” he noted, emphasising the importance of regular monitoring through blood tests and MRIs.

Reflecting on his MS journey, Alexakis recalled the initial MRI results which revealed lesions on the left side of his brain and one on his spine. At that time, his neurologist suggested these lesions might have been developing for several decades. The condition took a complicated turn in 2021 when Alexakis contracted COVID-19, leading to further health challenges and an extended hospital stay.

Now, the musician reports experiencing fewer side effects from his monthly TYSABRI infusions. “I get a little tired the first day, but then a couple of days later I feel normal,” he explained. He is committed to maintaining his active lifestyle, which includes a robust fitness regime and physical therapy three times a week. “If I eat proper food and stay away from inflammatory stuff, I feel better,” Alexakis shared, highlighting the role diet and exercise play in managing his condition.

The unwavering support from family has been vital in Alexakis’s journey. He credits his wife, Vanessa, for her strength and encouragement. “She would say, ‘you’re not taking my guy. You’re not taking my boy away from me. We are going to figure this out,’” he recalled. This support system has aided him in staying resilient and focused on his goals, both personally and professionally.

However, there is still an underlying fear associated with ageing and health complications. “Let’s be honest — there’s an element of fear just about getting older,” Alexakis admitted. “Things don’t work the way they used to work.” This perspective has fostered a strong desire to create a lasting legacy. He is driven to ensure financial stability for his family in the future.

Despite these fears, Alexakis remains positive about upcoming plans, including a trip to Corfu next year as his daughter prepares to head off to college. “We’ve got some money saved and we’ve got a lot of stuff to do,” he expressed, showcasing his determination to make the most of life’s opportunities.
