Man Falls into Ocean and Is Carried Away by ‘Strong Currents.’ Witnesses Heard His Cries for Help, but It Was Too Late

A tragic incident unfolded on February 27th when a 65-year-old man from Keaʻau, Hawaii, lost his life after falling into the sea while gathering ‘opihi, a native sea snail cherished in local tradition. The man was reportedly foraging along the Puna coastline when he lost his footing and plunged into the ocean, prompting cries for help that were heard by witnesses in the vicinity.

Emergency services were alerted shortly after the incident occurred. Local authorities received calls for assistance at approximately 8:14 a.m. and dispatched first responders to the scene along Kalapana-Kapoho Beach Road in the Kapoho area.

Upon their arrival, rescuers located the man, who was struggling against strong ocean currents. They quickly brought him ashore and began life-saving measures, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Despite their efforts, the man was later transported to a medical centre in Hilo, where he was pronounced dead at 9:28 a.m., according to the Hawaii Police Department.

In light of the circumstances surrounding the man’s death, officials have initiated a coroner’s inquest to investigate the nature of the incident, which is being treated as a possible drowning. Authorities have indicated that they will not release the identity of the deceased until family members have been properly informed. At this stage, there is no indication of foul play involved in the tragic event.

The Honolulu Department of the Medical Examiner has yet to provide additional comments regarding the situation, as investigations remain ongoing.

According to the University of Hawaii, those who attempt to collect these molluscs are often faced with challenging and treacherous conditions that can result in accidents.

Due to the hazards associated with collecting ‘opihi, legislation implemented in 2006 prohibits the sale of these creatures, restricting their gathering strictly to personal use. This regulation aims to protect not only the species but also the safety of those who engage in this traditional practice.
