The incident reportedly involved another student striking Chuquipa in the head with a metal water bottle in a school hallway. Following this, her family indicated that she experienced severe headaches and was taken to the emergency room, where she was subsequently sent home despite her condition. Days later, the young girl collapsed due to a brain haemorrhage, resulting in a critical situation that required emergency care.
“Khimberly was rushed to UCLA Children’s Hospital, where she was placed in an induced coma and underwent complex surgery,” a GoFundMe page dedicated to her memory explained. The family described their anguish as they remained at her side, hoping for her recovery. Sadly, their hopes were dashed when she passed away early in the morning on February 25.

In light of these events, the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) has launched an investigation into Chuquipa’s death, categorising it as a homicide. At present, investigators have withheld further information regarding the nature of the investigation, leaving the family and community in a state of uncertainty and grief.
The GoFundMe campaign has received an outpouring of support, reflecting the deep void left by Chuquipa’s passing. In memorialising her, family members shared their sorrow, highlighting her youthful spirit and numerous aspirations. “As the baby of our family, she brought a special light and joy into our lives,” the page states.

Chuquipa’s mother, Elma, expressed her profound despair in a heartfelt interview, stating, “I’m devastated. I’m full of pain, thinking about how I will never see my daughter again.” Her uncle added, “This is a cautionary tale that this should not happen to anybody’s kid.” His remarks echo a sentiment shared by many who fear losing a loved one, especially one so young and innocent.
Khimberly Zavaleta Chuquipa was a sixth-grade student at Reseda High, a charter institution catering to students from grades six to twelve. In remembrance of her life and the impact of her untimely death, a memorial has been erected outside the school, drawing the support of classmates and local residents mourning the loss.
The Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) expressed profound sorrow at the passing of a student. In a prepared statement, a spokesperson extended condolences to Chuquipa’s family and friends, emphasising, “Our thoughts are with the student’s family, friends, and the entire school community.” The spokesperson also highlighted the district’s commitment to providing counselling services and resources to those affected by this tragedy.
In light of the circumstances surrounding Khimberly’s death, the school district reiterated its commitment to student safety and well-being, affirming cooperation with law enforcement as the investigation unfolds. “The District takes the safety and well-being of our students very seriously,” the statement concluded, reflecting both concern and a determination to address the challenges highlighted by this heartbreaking situation.
As investigations continue into the events leading to this tragic loss, the community is left grappling with grief while also calling for deeper conversations around the impact of bullying in school environments. The hope is that Khimberly’s story will spark change and prevent similar tragedies from occurring in the future.
