Billings, who is 63, expressed her sorrow in a video posted on February 20, the day after Dane’s death attributed to complications from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). The actress, recognised for her role in “Transparent,” recalled the impact Dane had during the filming of the third season of “Grey’s Anatomy,” where she portrayed Donna Gibson, a trans woman facing a breast cancer diagnosis while undergoing her transition.

Reflecting on her groundbreaking role, which she received in 2006, Billings admitted to being surprised as there were few opportunities for transgender actors in the entertainment industry at that time. “The landscape for transgender performers in Hollywood was the Sahara Desert; it was nonexistent,” she stated, recalling her feelings of disbelief upon reading the script. She appreciated the authenticity of the character, which led her to ponder if a transgender person had written it.

In the episode titled “Where the Boys Are,” Billings’ character was confronted with a dire choice regarding her hormone treatment, a portrayal that was both poignant and true to the experiences of many. Despite her initial excitement about the role, Billings admitted to feeling anxious on set due to the responsibility of conveying such an important narrative.
During their first scene together, Billings recounted how Dane, who played Dr. Mark Sloan, was misgendering her character. After the director called for a break, Dane took the opportunity to engage with Billings more personally. “He asked about my own real-life experience transitioning in the ’80s,” she recalled. Although initially hesitant, Billings eventually opened up about the challenges she faced during her transition, including instances of legal harassment.
What stood out to her was not just the conversation but Dane’s genuine desire to understand her experience. “The entire set stops and listens to me because of Eric,” she recounted, highlighting his ability to create a safe environment where she felt seen and heard. His empathetic approach prompted a heartfelt discussion about the importance of compassion in medical interactions, which resonated with Billings.
As they prepared to film the scene again, Billings grew emotional, noting how Dane’s behaviour shifted to become even more supportive. During takes, he placed his hand on her shoulder and later held her hand, actions that resonated deeply with her. “This compassionate, kind, brave human being changed everything for me,” Billings confessed, underscoring the significance of such gestures within the context of the story they were telling.
Despite the challenges on set, including time constraints that initially resulted in the cutting of her monologue, Dane’s proactive nature shone through. He encouraged Billings to distil her speech into its most powerful elements, ensuring that the essence of her character’s journey was preserved. “He didn’t have to do that,” Billings asserted. “There was no reason in the world for him to do that… he was concerned that the trans story was told from an honest and true place.”
Billings praised Dane as one of the most compassionate individuals she had worked with, stating that moments like theirs were rare in the industry. “Eric Dane showed everyone on that set what a true ally looks like,” she declared, emphasizing that allyship is not merely about words or financial contributions but about taking actionable steps to advocate for others.
Through her emotional tribute, Billings encapsulated the essence of Dane’s character, expressing gratitude for his kindness and support. “I didn’t know him, but I absolutely knew him,” she concluded, as she thanked him on behalf of the transgender community and others who strive for genuine understanding and acceptance in a world increasingly aware of diversity and inclusion.
As the news of Dane’s death continues to resonate, Billings’ reflection stands as a powerful reminder of the significant role allies play in amplifying marginalized voices and creating inclusive spaces.
