**Tragic Discovery: Missing Alaskan Teen Found After Canoe Incident**

The community of Sand Point, Alaska, is mourning the loss of a beloved local teenager, Kaipo Kaminanga, whose life was tragically cut short following a canoe accident. Kaipo, 15, was reported missing after the canoe he was in capsized on Red Cove Lake on February 23. Tragically, authorities confirmed on February 26 that his body had been recovered from the water.

The Alaska Dive Search Rescue and Recovery Team announced the discovery of Kaipo’s body at approximately 5 p.m. local time. In a statement, the team expressed their sorrow at the loss and their relief at being able to bring closure to Kaipo’s family and the wider community during this challenging time.

Paul Mueller, CEO of Eastern Aleutian Tribes, noted that the situation had been especially difficult for Kaipo’s family and friends. He conveyed his condolences, encouraging the community to keep Kaipo’s family in their thoughts and prayers as they navigate this unimaginable tragedy. “This is a deeply difficult moment for the family, the youth involved, and the entire Sand Point community,” Mueller remarked, reflecting on the collective grief felt by many.

According to information shared by Austin Roof, a teacher at the Aleutians East Borough School District who initiated a crowdfunding campaign to support Kaipo’s family, the group of three boys had travelled to Red Cove Lake from a nearby trailhead using ATVs. While two of the boys boarded the community-use canoe with Kaipo, another friend remained on the shore.

Reports indicate that the canoe overturned while the boys were on the water. The friend who had stayed on land bravely entered the frigid water in an attempt to assist his peers. He was able to reach the other two boys, but unfortunately, Kaipo had gone underwater, and despite their efforts, he could not be saved.

Sand Point Police Chief Benjamin Allen provided insights into the search efforts, stating that attempts were made to track Kaipo’s mobile phone by pinging its last known location. However, due to the limited 2G service available on the island, authorities were only able to access the device’s last activity, which hampered the search.

The community has come together to support Kaipo’s family during this difficult time. As of February 27, the GoFundMe campaign created by Roof had raised over £65,000, a testament to the love and respect the community has for Kaipo and his family. Roof expressed the profound impact this loss has had on the close-knit community, saying, “Everyone’s close to each other. Everyone cares for each other. This family in particular is really well-loved by everyone in the community.”
