Melissa Claire Egan, best known for her role in the soap opera “The Young and the Restless,” recently shared a significant personal health update regarding her diagnosis of coronary heart disease. In a heartfelt post on Instagram, the 44-year-old actress expressed her gratitude for early detection of the condition, which could have resulted in a potentially life-threatening heart attack or stroke.

In her post, Egan revealed that she had been diagnosed with coronary heart disease in late January. “I wanted to share that in late January I was diagnosed with Coronary heart disease. Thanks to early detection, and medicine, I will be okay!” she wrote. Despite her typically private nature, she felt it was crucial to raise awareness about her condition, particularly for women who may not be aware of their health risks.
Coronary heart disease, also known as coronary artery disease (CAD), involves the narrowing or blockage of arteries that provide oxygen-rich blood to the heart. This condition results from plaque accumulation, which can significantly compromise blood flow to the heart muscle. If left untreated, a complete blockage can lead to a heart attack.

Egan disclosed that her journey began when her primary care physician, Dr. Thaïs Aliabadi, noted elevated results in her bloodwork. This prompted a referral to cardiologist Dr. Mo Ghalichi. A subsequent heart calcium scan unveiled the presence of plaque in her left anterior descending (LAD) artery, often referred to as the “widowmaker” due to its association with severe heart complications.
The actress acknowledged how mildly she is currently affected but also pointed out the rarity of such a diagnosis in a woman her age, highlighting how it may be genetic. “This could have caused the plaque to chip off and cause a fatal heart attack or stroke any time over the next 5-10 years, maybe even sooner,” she explained in her post.
Reflecting on her diagnosis, Egan shared a poignant moment from that evening, stating, “Later that night after I was diagnosed, I laid with my sons, putting them to bed, feeling so grateful to God and my doctors that I found this early.” She expressed concern for others who might be unaware of their own risk factors, noting that coronary heart disease is often under-tested and under-recognised, both in women and men.
Egan pointed out that while there is considerable emphasis on the need for annual mammograms, heart health assessments are frequently overlooked. Cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of death among women, claiming the lives of one in three each year.
In her message, she urged her followers to take proactive steps regarding their heart health. “Tell your doctor you want to be evaluated for coronary heart disease risk,” she recommended. She specifically advised that patients should request their doctors to monitor Lipoprotein(a) and ApoB levels, and to inquire about a heart calcium scan.
In conclusion, Egan has committed to using her platform to promote heart health awareness. She encouraged her audience to focus on their cardiovascular well-being and to work together in supporting one another’s health journeys. “Let’s all band together, focus on our heart health, and live longer!!” she proclaimed, underscoring the importance of early detection and intervention.
With her story, Melissa Claire Egan aims to inspire others to prioritise their health, dispelling the misconception that heart disease predominantly affects older men, and reiterating the necessity for regular health assessments.
