Body of Woman Found 65 Feet Below Water’s Surface After She Disappeared While Scuba Diving

A tragic scuba diving incident off the coast of Argentina has resulted in the death of a 23-year-old woman, Sofia Devries, who was found two days after disappearing during a dive. On February 16, Devries was participating in a diving course aimed at advancing her scuba certification near Punta Cuevas Historical Park in Chubut province, when she failed to resurface.

The group was diving in Golfo Nuevo at an artificial reef created from the sunken fishing vessel Hu Shun Yu 809, which had been deliberately submerged in 2017 to foster marine life. He revealed that the couple had travelled to Puerto Madryn for their diving certification and noted that a tragic accident had occurred underwater. He was particularly critical of the response efforts, claiming that initial responders prioritised bureaucratic processes over swift action to locate her.

Prosecutor Alex Williams provided insight into the circumstances surrounding Devries’ death, stating that she encountered a medical emergency while ascending from the dive. Eyewitness accounts suggested that her partner attempted to assist her but was ultimately unsuccessful.
