A young Australian snowboarder has tragically lost her life following a freak accident involving a ski lift at a popular resort in Japan. Twenty-two-year-old Brooke Day was vacationing with friends at Tsugaike Mountain Resort when the incident occurred on 30 January.

The accident unfolded when Day’s backpack became entangled with the ski lift, leading to a harrowing experience where she was lifted off the ground. Reports indicate that she was suspended in mid-air for roughly 18 yards before staff were able to halt the lift by pressing the emergency stop button. It was later confirmed that Day suffered a cardiac arrest during the incident and was subsequently transported to a hospital, where she passed away.
Initial investigations reveal that the mishap occurred because one of the buckles on Day’s backpack, which was not fully secured, caught on the lift chair. The backpack, fastened across her chest, left her unable to disembark while the lift continued to operate. As a result, she found herself hanging approximately 26 feet above the ground until help arrived.
According to local media outlet Yomiuri Shimbun, it took around 15 minutes for emergency personnel to reach her after the lift was stopped. It was reported that a staff member first noticed she was suspended mid-air and activated the emergency procedures.
In a statement, Tsugaike Gondola Lift Co. shed light on the circumstances leading to the tragedy. “A buckle at the end of an unfastened waist belt attached to a backpack carried by a customer became caught in the lift carriage,” the statement explained. It clarified that while the chest strap was secured, this effectively tethered the backpack to Day’s body, prolonging her perilous position.
The resort confirmed that quick action was taken to ensure her rescue, but despite their efforts, Day succumbed to her injuries after being transferred to the medical facility.
