Featherstone’s career aboard the cruise ship began in 2022. At that time, the news of his wife’s pregnancy was met with a sense of resignation about the future of his career at sea. “I kind of presumed that I would never work on a cruise ship again,” he recalls. The cruise line he worked for had age restrictions and did not permit crew members to bring their families on board, leading him to believe that chapter of his life was over.
However, a last-minute audition changed everything. Just weeks before planning to leave the cruise industry for good, Featherstone received an unexpected opportunity. “I was looking for something more stable now that we had Piper,” he said, expressing his surprise and enthusiasm when his agent informed him that new policies allowed performers to have their families on board.
Currently, Featherstone’s work schedule consists of performing three nights a week, allowing him the remaining days to spend with Piper on the ship. “I’m very lucky,” he admits, enjoying the flexibility that his job affords. While Featherstone remains on the ship for up to six months, his wife, who is training to be a paramedic, alternates between working in London and joining him on board with their daughter.
Despite the joy of raising Piper in such an extraordinary setting, Featherstone acknowledges the emotional difficulty of their goodbyes. “When she turned two recently, saying goodbye was much harder because she understands now,” he explains, depicting a particularly dramatic farewell when they left. “It was like a film — we were all just standing there crying.”
The experience of parenting at sea has been both rewarding and challenging. Featherstone notes the wealth of activities available on the ship when Piper is feeling restless. “If she’s in a mood, there’s always a water park upstairs to distract her,” he shares, highlighting the onboard childcare services that have become an essential support system for their family. “She can also socialise with other children, which was something we worried about initially.”
Piper’s recent birthday was celebrated in Barbados, a milestone that Featherstone describes as both magical and surreal. “We feel like we might have peaked too soon with birthdays, celebrating on a tropical island,” he quips. His days on the ship are often filled with spontaneous adventures, akin to a holiday experience, such as riding horses along the beach in St. Lucia, a memory that stands out amid the daily routines.
However, beneath the surface of their idyllic lifestyle lies an emotional struggle. Featherstone faces challenges during his family’s absences and wrestles with feelings of doubt about the impact of this lifestyle choice. “When they’re not on board, it is horrible,” he confesses. Social media often portrays a glamorous life, leaving friends and family unaware of the difficulties he encounters during separations.
Despite the sacrifices, Featherstone finds solace in the quality time he shares with Piper while she is aboard. The balance between performing and parenting is often fleeting, but he reaffirms the importance of cherishing those moments together. “When I’m on stage, and they are in the audience, that’s still quality time,” he insists.
Looking towards the future, Featherstone contemplates potential changes when Piper reaches school age. Decisions about whether he will continue with this lifestyle or consider alternatives, such as homeschooling, linger on the horizon. “It’s something we need to discuss,” he adds, indicating that the current arrangement may not be sustainable indefinitely.
In hindsight, Featherstone expresses gratitude for the turn of events that enabled him to pursue his passion while being present in his daughter’s life. “I didn’t think this is what our life would look like when we had a baby,” he reflects. “But this opportunity has turned into a beautiful experience.”
