The Brandywine Valley SPCA (BVSPCA) is actively looking for foster homes and donations following the damage and power outages caused by a recent winter storm. According to the organisation, power has been restored at its Sussex County facilities, yet repairs are still ongoing.

The rescue’s Georgetown campus faced significant disruptions during the blizzard, leading to an extended power outage. Fortunately, the quick actions of local residents helped ensure that 22 adoptable dogs were temporarily relocated to emergency foster homes before the situation could worsen. A post on their Facebook page expressed gratitude for the community’s support in facilitating these emergency placements.
Following the restoration of electricity, the SPCA has resumed normal operations. Adoption and fostering hours at the Animal Rescue Center are now available from midday until 5:30 PM, while the Georgetown Campus operates from midday to 7 PM, although several dogs still require temporary fosters to help them through this challenging period.
The situation became critical during the storm, which caused substantial damage to the rescue’s facilities. Despite power returning to the Georgetown Campus, the Animal Rescue Center faced a prolonged outage. This prompted an urgent request for emergency foster homes, with no prior registration required for anyone willing to assist. Local residents were invited to visit the Animal Rescue Center during its operating hours to provide temporary housing for the dislocated dogs.
BVSPCA’s CEO, Adam Lamb, commended the efforts of staff and volunteers who worked tirelessly throughout the storm. He acknowledged the critical public support needed in light of the continuing adverse effects on the rescue’s facilities. Lamb highlighted the importance of community involvement, stating that fostering a dog, even for a short time, significantly helps the organisation manage the aftermath of the storm.
Though the immediate danger has subsided, the BVSPCA continues to grapple with the effects of the blizzard. Reports indicate that several trees have fallen, fencing has been damaged, and there are structural concerns in various outdoor areas of the Sussex County facilities. To better prepare for any future storms, the organisation is also considering the installation of emergency generators.
Community support is now paramount, and the organisation is calling on residents to assist by fostering or adopting pets. In addition to fostering, individuals can also contribute financially or donate essential supplies such as towels and blankets. BVSPCA has multiple locations where donations can be made, further encouraging collective community effort during these trying times.
