An 18-year-old from Pennsylvania has been charged with travelling across the United States to engage in sexual activity with a 13-year-old girl, while allegedly planning a suicide pact. Authorities apprehended Matthew Edward Pysher on 20 February while he was in a hotel room in California with the minor.

According to the prosecution’s report, Pysher and the girl, who was identified as a victim, had been communicating on the online platform Discord since December 2022. It is alleged that Pysher groomed the young girl by encouraging her to engage in self-harm and share explicit content online. The complaint revealed that he instructed her to create a server on Discord, where she would be filmed self-harming.
Concerns about the girl’s safety were raised when her mother contacted the FBI on 10 February. She reported that her daughter was being encouraged to harm herself by someone named Matthew, who the girl had encountered in a Discord community focused on mental illness. Just days before Pysher’s arrest, the girl’s mother informed FBI agents that her daughter had gone missing and that a suicide note had been found by family members.
After securing digital evidence linked to Pysher, FBI agents tracked his flight from Pennsylvania to Los Angeles on the same day of the arrest. Surveillance footage revealed that Pysher and the girl had checked into The Rodeway Inn in Castaic, roughly 40 miles north of Los Angeles.
When law enforcement entered the motel room, they discovered the girl hiding in the bathroom. The investigation revealed alarming details, including the presence of a knife, several razor blades, and blood-stained tissues. The victim recounted that Pysher had harmed her with a knife on multiple occasions before sexually assaulting her. She allegedly stated that during the assault, Pysher choked her, leaving her unable to speak.
Pysher has yet to appear in court to answer to the charges. He faces a federal charge for travelling with the intent to engage in illicit sexual conduct. The case remains under investigation, with authorities urging other potential victims of Pysher to come forward to the Los Angeles field office.
