Neve Campbell, the renowned actress most famous for her role as Sidney Prescott in the iconic Scream franchise, has recently shared her thoughts on her absence from the sixth film and her joyful return for the seventh installment. In an interview on CBS Mornings, Campbell expressed support for her earlier decision to step away from Scream VI, making it clear that it was not a choice made lightly.

Reflecting on her departure, Campbell stated, “When I said goodbye to it, I thought that was it. I knew that there was a good chance that would be it.” Although she harboured feelings of sadness upon learning that filming had commenced without her, she maintains that the choice was the correct one. “I was sad. When I knew they were having their first day of shooting and I wasn’t there, I was like, ‘That sucks,’ but at the same time, I knew that my decision was right,” the 52-year-old actress explained.
Since debuting in the franchise’s first film in 1996, Campbell has portrayed the character of Sidney in every sequel, except for the 2023 release, Scream VI. Her decision to abstain from that chapter was publicly announced in June 2022, with the actress stating that the offer presented did not reflect the worth she believed she had contributed to the beloved series.
During her conversation with co-host Gayle King, Campbell was queried about the possibility of her return to the beloved franchise following her exit. The actress recounted her reasoning behind her decision, asserting, “When I made that decision, I just didn’t think I could live with myself walking on set. I just didn’t feel right.” She highlighted the importance of feeling valued in her role, saying that she needed to prioritise her sense of worth over participation.
Following her decision to skip Scream VI, Campbell made clear that she remained open to future opportunities within the franchise. In August 2022, she shared, “It would really depend on what they came to me with next. It would have to be different. It would have to be a different attitude, and I’m not sure that’s going to happen.” She indicated that any reconsideration would hinge on an offer that felt respectful and reflective of her contribution to the series.
Despite her absence from the sixth film, Campbell’s affection for the franchise remained intact. At a fan convention, she expressed her desire for Scream VI to succeed, stating, “I don’t wish these movies ill will… It’s not like I’m sitting in my house going, ‘I hope it sucks, I hope it doesn’t do well.'”
Excitement about Campbell’s return has surged ever since her announcement in March 2024 that she would reprise her role in Scream 7. “I’m very happy and proud to say I’ve been asked, in the most respectful way, to bring Sidney back to the screen and I couldn’t be more thrilled,” she conveyed at that time. Her return arrives after a period of turmoil for the film, including the exit of the lead actress Melissa Barrera and her onscreen sister from the project.
Scream 7, directed by Kevin Williamson, features other stalwarts of the series, including Courteney Cox, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Mason Gooding, and Matthew Lillard. The film will also showcase new faces such as Isabel May, Anna Camp, and Joel McHale, among others.
