A tragic accident occurred at the São Jorge River waterfall in Ponta Grossa, Brazil, when a 36-year-old tourist lost his life after falling while attempting to take a photograph. The deceased, identified as Caio Libero Batistela, plunged approximately 40 metres from the edge of the waterfall, which stands at a height of 131 feet.

The incident unfolded on Saturday, February 21, as Batistela attempted to capture a memorable moment near the edge of the cascade. According to eyewitness accounts, he lost his balance while positioning himself to take the photo. Fire Department Cadet Gustavo Sabatoski provided insights into the sequence of events, stating, “The person who was with him reported that he got too close to the fall and, while taking the picture, he lost his balance.”
Witnesses indicated that Batistela’s companion tried to grasp his clothing in a bid to prevent him from falling but was ultimately unsuccessful and nearly fell into the gorge themselves. The situation was compounded by the hazardous terrain surrounding the waterfall, which is encased by towering rock formations and dense vegetation.
Emergency services responded swiftly, arriving on the scene at around 2:50 p.m. local time. However, the steep and treacherous landscape posed challenges for rescuers. Batistela was located in an area deemed high-risk by the emergency responders. Fire Cadet Sabatoski mentioned that upon reaching the victim, the area was immediately cordoned off to facilitate the arrival of forensic investigators.
A helicopter from the Mobile Emergency Care Service, known as Samu, was also deployed to the site. Despite their efforts, Batistela was pronounced dead at the scene. Following the incident, officials conducted an investigation into the circumstances surrounding his tragic fall.
Batistela’s body was subsequently transported to the Forensic Medical Institute in Ponta Grossa before being handed over to his family. He hailed from Curitiba, a city located approximately 114 kilometres from Ponta Grossa. His funeral service was reported to be scheduled for Monday, February 23, as family and friends mourn the loss of a loved one taken too soon.
Local authorities have been contacted for further comments regarding the incident, and inquiries are ongoing. The tragic event highlights the dangers associated with taking risks near natural attractions, where the allure of breathtaking views can sometimes lead to unforeseen consequences.
