Delta Flight Reportedly Sparks Large Grass Fire at Savannah Airport After Engine Fails During Takeoff

A mechanical failure has been linked to a significant grass fire at Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport, occurring on 22nd February. The incident involved Delta flight 1067, which had taken off for Atlanta when it was forced to return shortly after departure due to an engine issue.

According to a preliminary report from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the aircraft, a Boeing 737, experienced an engine failure during takeoff. As a result of the incident, the plane was obliged to turn back to the airport. A spokesperson for Delta Airlines confirmed the mechanical issue pertained specifically to the left engine of the aircraft.

Reports indicate that shortly after the failed takeoff, flames erupted from the engine which subsequently ignited a large grass fire at the airport. An audio recording captured the communication between the flight crew and air traffic control, illustrating the moment of distress. During this exchange, the controller noted they observed “a pretty large flame” as the aircraft took off, while the pilot acknowledged the loss of the left engine.

The concern escalated as the air traffic controller relayed alarming details about the fire, stating that the entire taxiway was ablaze. When the pilot inquired if the fire was connected to their aircraft, the response confirmed that the blown engine had indeed caused the grass on the left side of the airport to ignite. Footage shared with media outlets depicted the runway engulfed in flames, with thick smoke billowing into the sky.

Despite these alarming circumstances, Delta Airlines reported that the aircraft managed to land safely back at the airport. Passengers were able to disembark without incident and were led to safety at the terminal. A total of 179 passengers, along with two pilots and four flight attendants, were aboard the flight when the emergency unfolded.

Later in the evening, arrangements were made for the affected passengers to board a replacement aircraft. They eventually completed their journey to Atlanta, arriving just after 3:00 a.m. local time. Delta expressed their regret for the disruption, reiterating that the safety of their customers and crew is their foremost priority.

The FAA has initiated an investigation into the incident, as is standard procedure for such occurrences. This inquiry aims to gather more information regarding the mechanical failure and to assess any potential factors contributing to the aircraft’s engine malfunction.
