Lindsey Vonn, the celebrated American skier, has released a heartfelt update regarding her recovery after sustaining a severe injury during the 2026 Winter Olympics. The 41-year-old athlete shared on her Instagram account that she faced life-threatening complications from a crash that left her with a major leg injury, nearly resulting in the amputation of her left leg.

In a detailed video update shared on Monday, 23 February, Vonn recounted the harrowing two weeks since the incident. She described the experience as her most painful and challenging injury to date. “It has been quite the journey,” she stated, “and by far the most extreme trip of my entire life times one hundred.”
The injury occurred on February 8, just seconds into her run in the women’s downhill event. Vonn clipped a gate and lost control, which resulted in a complex fracture of her tibia. Adding to her misfortunes, she developed compartment syndrome, a serious condition where excess pressure in a muscle compartment restricts blood flow, thereby endangering her muscles and nerves.
In her candid update, Vonn explained how this condition exacerbated her injuries, stating, “The trauma from the crash led to too much blood in one area of my leg that crushed everything.” She highlighted how painful this condition was and lamented the extreme pressure it put on her body.
Vonn expressed deep gratitude towards her surgeon, Dr Tom Hackett, for his critical role in saving her limb. “He did a fasciotomy, where he cut open both sides of my leg and kind of filleted it open… let it breathe,” she explained emotionally. Without his intervention, she believes her leg might not have been saved.
In addition to the tibia fracture, Vonn also suffered a broken right ankle in the crash, meaning she faces two months in a wheelchair while recovering from the injuries. Prior to this accident, she had sustained a torn ACL during a World Cup race on January 30 in Switzerland, which had required immediate medical attention and led to her being in proximity to her surgeon during the Olympics.
Despite the setbacks, Vonn managed to find a silver lining in her situation. In her video, she remarked, “I always talk about everything happens for a reason. If I hadn’t torn my ACL, Tom wouldn’t have been there to save my leg.” This perspective highlights her resilient spirit and determination to make the most of a challenging situation.
Vonn underwent surgery on February 18, which lasted six hours, and she described the procedure as having gone “amazingly well,” though her recovery took longer than anticipated due to complications including blood loss and subsequently needing a transfusion. “I was really struggling,” she reflected, acknowledging the depth of her pain and the arduous nature of her recovery.
As she looks forward, Vonn remains focused on her rehabilitation. “I’m going to get right to work on rehab,” she stated with determination. Though she admitted that the experience has been difficult, she expressed pride in her teammates who continue to excel at the Games. “It’s really inspiring to watch them dominate the Winter Games for Team USA,” Vonn said, underscoring her supportive nature and commitment to her sport.
Concluding her update, Vonn reassured her fans and followers that she will persevere through her rehabilitation journey. “It’s going to be a long road, but I always fight. I’ll keep going. No regrets,” she stated resolutely. “I just appreciate all the love and support… it’s been overwhelming to an extent.” Despite the traumatic nature of her injury, her optimistic outlook and fighting spirit shine brightly as she embarks on the path to recovery.
