A Wyoming man has demonstrated remarkable determination by marrying his fiancée just days after undergoing lifesaving heart surgery. Ken Woolsey, 61, wed Lonna Heath Porter on Valentine’s Day, a mere ten days after a quadruple bypass procedure at Banner Wyoming Medical Center in Casper.

The unexpected health crisis began for Woolsey on January 30, when he experienced severe discomfort during a typical day at work. While performing his job making concrete forms, he felt a sudden pain in his left arm and chest. Recognising that something was wrong, he changed out of his work clothes, and his boss promptly took him to the emergency room.
Upon arrival, medical staff quickly diagnosed him with a heart attack and recommended immediate surgery. Woolsey recalled feeling bewildered, having never encountered heart problems before. In an emergency situation, he was faced with the potential of a dire outcome.
Dr. Joseph Monfre, the cardiothoracic surgeon who performed the surgery alongside cardiologist Dr. Gary Idelchik, indicated that recovery from such an extensive operation typically spans several months. Despite the medical advice to rest, Woolsey was resolute in his desire to marry Porter as they’ve been planning to celebrate their love on February 14.
“Open-heart surgery is a significant event, especially when coupled with a wedding,” Dr. Monfre noted, indicating the delicate balance of health and celebration in this situation. Woolsey was undeterred by the concerns of family and friends, who suggested he delay the wedding. His commitment to marrying Porter was unwavering.
“My fiancée offered to postpone the ceremony, but I was insistent,” Woolsey explained. “We had sent out the invitations, and I was not willing to let anything — even heart surgery — interfere with our plans.” His determination was met with encouragement from the medical team, who shared in his vision of achieving his wedding dream.
