Mom, Who Vanished Without a Trace 24 Years Ago, Found ‘Alive,’ Leaving Family with Unanswered Questions

A North Carolina woman who vanished over two decades ago has been located, bringing a mix of relief and lingering mystery for her family and authorities. Michele Hundley Smith, who is now 62 years old, was first reported missing on 31 December 2001 after not returning home from a shopping trip. Law enforcement discovered her whereabouts following a tip received on 19 February 2023.

According to a statement released by the Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office, Sgt. A. Disher and Detective C. Worley made contact with Smith at an undisclosed location in North Carolina on 20 February. The sheriffs reported that she was “alive and well” at the time of their conversation and requested that her location remain confidential. Her family has also been informed of her discovery and her wishes regarding privacy.

Smith, who was 38 years old when she disappeared, left her home in Eden, North Carolina, on 9 December 2001. She intended to do Christmas shopping at a K-Mart in nearby Martinsville, Virginia, which is approximately 17 miles from her residence. Her husband was the first to inform authorities of her sudden absence, prompting a thorough investigation.

The investigation into Smith’s disappearance saw the involvement of multiple agencies over nearly 20 years, including the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI), the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Throughout this time, the Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office maintained an active interest in the case, continuously exploring leads and new information.

Family members have also been instrumental in keeping the search for Smith alive. In 2018, her daughter Amanda Hundley created a Facebook page aimed at gathering tips from the public. Other relatives, including Barbara Byrd, Smith’s cousin, have made public appeals, urging for continued attention on the case to unearth the mystery surrounding Michele’s disappearance.

Upon learning that her mother has been found, Amanda expressed her complex emotions in a heartfelt statement on social media. “I am ecstatic, I am pissed, I am heartbroken, I am all over the map!” she wrote, articulating a whirlwind of feelings that accompanied the news. Amanda questioned the possibility of re-establishing a relationship with her mother and acknowledged the emotional challenges involved. “My initial reaction would be yes absolutely but then I think of all the hurt,” she shared, reflecting on the time lost.

Barbara Byrd also shared her thoughts, speaking to local news outlet WFMY after the announcement. “I kind of want to go outside and scream, ‘She’s alive, she’s alive,’ ” she expressed, highlighting her joy at the news, but also her profound curiosity about Smith’s past. Byrd voiced her desire to understand what transpired in December 2001 that led to her cousin’s disappearance. “What happened all those years ago? What made you leave?” Byrd pondered, seeking clarity on a chapter that has now been partially rewritten.

Despite the confusion and unanswered questions that remain, Byrd stressed the importance of Smith’s wellbeing. “I understand and respect that she doesn’t want any of us to contact her. I’m not angry,” she remarked, prioritising the knowledge of her cousin’s safety over all else.
