A French bulldog has been rescued after being mistaken for a mountain lion. The incident took place near the Sacramento Airport, following a report of a small, muscular animal with pointed ears found in a ditch. Despite the initial confusion, rescuers were able to save the abandoned pup.

Ben Nuckolls, who is part of the rescue organization California Wildlife Encounters, responded to a report of a young mountain lion sighting on a Saturday. The report indicated that the mountain lion was spotted in a watery drainage ditch close to the Sacramento airport. However, upon arriving at the scene, Nuckolls discovered a different animal altogether – a neglected French bulldog.
Initially unresponsive, the French bulldog was carefully swaddled in a blanket by Nuckolls to keep warm. The pup was then taken to a local veterinarian for a thorough examination and a check for a microchip. Unfortunately, no microchip was found, making it impossible to identify an owner for the dog.
Subsequently, the French bulldog was placed under a mandatory stray animal hold at the Bradshaw Animal Shelter. The 6-month-old dog weighing around 18 pounds was believed to have been abandoned due to not meeting certain breed standards, which could impact its monetary value.
The Bradshaw Animal Shelter provided care for the French bulldog, but plans were made to transfer the pup to another rescue organization with more experience and resources in handling French bulldogs. Despite the confusion and abandonment, the pup was now in safe hands and receiving the necessary care it needed.
Mountain lions are a common sight in the area near the Sacramento River, where the abandoned French bulldog was found. According to the Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge, mountain lions can be found wherever there are deer. Vigilance is crucial, especially during dawn, dusk, or night when mountain lions are most active.
Authorities advise against running or crouching if approached by a mountain lion, and instead recommend making oneself appear larger and fighting back. These actions are contrary to typical prey behavior, which may deter a mountain lion from attacking.
The heartwarming rescue story of the French bulldog serves as a reminder of the importance of accurate identification and care for animals in need. It also highlights the dedication of rescue organizations and individuals like Ben Nuckolls, who go above and beyond to ensure the safety and well-being of all creatures, big and small.
