Despite efforts to stabilise the scene and seek assistance from other agencies, the rescue operation proved to be arduous. It took a gruelling six hours for first responders to extricate the victims from the trench. Tragically, the third person rescued succumbed to injuries sustained during the collapse.

Claudia Ramirez identified the victim as her cousin, Jose Alberto Barajas, who had been working alongside his father in the trench at the time of the incident. The family was left in shock and disbelief at the unexpected loss of Barajas, who had moved to the United States from Mexico on a work visa two years ago to pursue his dreams.

According to initial reports, the workers trapped in the trench were contractors hired for water control piping installation. It was noted that standard trench safety systems, typically required for such work, were absent at the site. This absence raises questions as to why preventive measures were not in place on that fateful day.

Following the tragic incident, representatives from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) arrived at the scene to launch an investigation. Local authorities are also considering the possibility of pressing charges, including reckless homicide and negligent assault, in relation to the incident.

Miami Township Chief Robert Hirsch emphasised the importance of determining potential criminal culpability in the wake of the fatal trench collapse that resulted in one fatality and injuries to two others.
