Jewish Home with Hanukkah Decorations Shot at 20 Times by Gunmen Who Yelled ‘Free Palestine,’ Family Says

A Jewish family in California faced a frightening ordeal when their home, adorned with Hanukkah decorations, was targeted by individuals who shot at their residence more than 20 times. The family, identified as the Cohens, reported that the gunmen shouted anti-semitic and racist slurs during the attack, further emphasising the severity of the incident. The Redlands Police Department issued a press release acknowledging the potential hate crime against the Jewish family in the 1300 block of Magnolia Avenue, with investigations currently ongoing.

Rodgir Cohen and his wife Heftsibah Cohen spoke to Los Angeles’ KTLA 5 News about the harrowing experience and shared surveillance footage capturing the events of that fateful evening. The incident occurred as the family was preparing to leave their home around 8 p.m. on a Friday. Two women and a man passed by their house in a four-door sedan, with one of them reportedly brandishing what appeared to be a gun. Jon Paul Cohen, the son, recounted the chilling moment one of the individuals yelled ‘Free Palestine’ and directed a racial slur towards him, leaving him shaken by the proximity of the potential threat.

Following their departure, the attackers circled back to the Cohens’ house, leading to a series of shots being fired at their property. Initially mistaken for fireworks, the family later realised the severity of the situation after reviewing their surveillance footage. The perpetrators used what seemed to be an airsoft gun, causing damage to some of the Hanukkah-themed decorations displayed in their front yard. Despite the terrifying episode, no injuries were reported, and the police found no shell casings at the scene.

The Redlands Police Department expressed solidarity with the Jewish community during the Hanukkah celebrations, highlighting the unfortunate reality of such targeted attacks based on religious beliefs. The incident occurred amidst a wave of violence globally, with the need to address and combat acts of hatred and discrimination becoming increasingly urgent.
