In a heartwarming tribute, over 500 people gathered to mourn the passing of Nitama, a beloved feline train stationmaster in Japan. Nitama, a calico kitty, served as the second-ever feline stationmaster at Wakayama Electric Railway Co.’s Kishigawa Line. The furry stationmaster was laid to rest in a funeral held on December 13 at Kishi Station in Wakayama Prefecture, leaving cat lovers across Japan in mourning.

The rail company announced the sad news of Nitama’s passing on November 20, following a period of illness that began in late October 2025. The funeral, attended by both human train employees and passionate fans of the feline, was a touching affair as Wakayama Electric Railway Co. honoured Nitama by enshrining her and bestowing upon her the title of “Honorary Special Stationmaster.”
Following the ceremony, attendees had the opportunity to pay their respects to Nitama by admiring a special portrait of the beloved stationmaster. The outpouring of love and support was evident as prayers were offered for Nitama’s peaceful rest in the afterlife. An altar adorned with flowers and cans of cat food was set up near the station, serving as a tribute to the impact Nitama had on the community.
Mitsunobu Kojima, president of Wakayama Electric Railway and chairman of the funeral committee, expressed his gratitude for Nitama’s unwavering dedication and comforting presence. “She worked diligently and provided irreplaceable comfort,” said Kojima, highlighting the significance of Nitama’s role in the community. He also called upon Nitama to watch over the railway company from heaven, alongside her predecessor, Stationmaster Tama.
Nitama’s journey as a stationmaster began in 2015 following the passing of Tama, the first feline to hold the prestigious title at Kishi Station. Tama’s legacy as a stationmaster was marked by her contribution to revitalising the financially struggling rail line, bringing in significant revenue and increasing passenger numbers during her tenure. Nitama, who hailed from Okayama City before being adopted by the rail company, was chosen as Tama’s successor due to her aptitude and training under Tama’s guidance.
The ceremony was a poignant reminder of the profound impact that animals can have on our lives, transcending boundaries and bringing communities together in times of both joy and sorrow. Nitama’s legacy as a stationmaster cat will be fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of crossing paths with this remarkable and beloved feline.
The heartwarming tribute to Nitama exemplifies the deep bond that exists between humans and animals, showcasing the capacity for love, compassion, and unity in our shared experiences. As we bid farewell to Nitama, we are reminded of the enduring power of connection and the profound impact that even the smallest creatures can have on our lives. In a world filled with chaos and uncertainty, Nitama’s legacy serves as a beacon of hope and a testament to the enduring spirit of love and kindness that unites us all.
