Ravyn Lenae, the talented singer, is using her platform to encourage other artists to embrace their true selves. In a recent exclusive interview with PEOPLE, Lenae shared her thoughts on the importance of staying true to one’s identity despite facing criticism and doubt from others.

The conversation took place at the 2025 Z100 Jingle Ball event held at Madison Square Garden in N.Y.C. on Friday, December 12. Lenae, who has been making waves with her hit song “Love Me Not,” reflected on a recent social media comment that questioned her “aesthetic” as a Black woman.

Lenae expressed her belief that facing questions and confusion about one’s identity signifies a positive disruption in the status quo. She shared, “When there are a lot of questions or confusion around who you are, that’s usually a good thing. And that means that you’re disrupting something.”
Acknowledging the challenges that come with carving out one’s path, Lenae encouraged fellow artists to persevere, even when the journey feels lonely or uncertain. She emphasised, “Sometimes the path you walk is a little lonely, or it’s a little uneasy, but there’s something on the other side of it.”
This empowering message from Lenae comes on the heels of her response to a social media user who attempted to pigeonhole her aesthetic as the “only Black girl in the White friend group.” In a video shared on Instagram, she highlighted her sources of inspiration, including legendary Black women in music like Chaka Khan, Minnie Riperton, and Diana Ross.
Lenae boldly asserted, “If you really study Black aesthetic, you would know that I’m pulling directly from the women who have come before me… That’s who I look to.” She challenged narrow perceptions of Black women and urged against projecting limiting stereotypes onto individuals.
By speaking out about her experiences and standing firm in her authenticity, Lenae is setting a powerful example for artists and individuals alike. Her unwavering commitment to self-expression and cultural pride serves as a reminder of the importance of embracing one’s identity in the face of adversity.
As Lenae continues to navigate her musical journey and inspire others with her music, her message of self-acceptance and empowerment resonates with a wide audience. By staying true to herself and encouraging others to do the same, she is making a significant impact in the music industry and beyond.
