A surfer is currently recovering in a hospital after a shark attack incident at a beach in Northern California. The attack took place at North Salmon Creek on Friday, December 12th, leaving the victim with an injured hand. The Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office reported that the surfer was bitten on the hand by a shark but chose to decline medical treatment at the scene.

The Sheriff’s Office mentioned that the Marine Unit found the surfer on the shore after they managed to get out of the water themselves. The quick response from the Marine Unit allowed the Sonoma County Fire 8880 to reduce its response to Code 2. Despite sustaining non-life-threatening injuries, the victim opted to transport himself to the hospital after refusing medical treatment at the scene.
A photograph released by the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office revealed the surfboard of the victim, showing multiple shark bites following the attack. The specific species of the shark involved in the attack has not been disclosed yet. Witness Alex Valentin shared with The San Francisco Standard that he saw the surfer entering the water around 8 a.m. local time on the fateful day. Upon his return 30 minutes later, he found paramedics attending to the victim in an ambulance.
Notably, this is not the first shark attack incident in the California area this year. Earlier reports indicated attacks at Montara Beach and Catalina Island. Additionally, previous shark attacks involving surfers occurred at Salmon Creek in October 2021 and May 2019. The California White Shark Project highlighted that great white sharks are frequently spotted in the region during this period of the year.
President of the non-profit organisation, Paul Kanive, stated, “It’s not uncommon for them to be in that area this time of year. The smaller sharks are transitioning to seals and sea lions. They’re gaining the experience of pinpointing their prey, so they’re more likely to make a mistake than adults that have decades of experience.” The community has been urged to stay cautious while in the water due to the increased shark activity in the area.
Incidents like this serve as a reminder of the risks that individuals face when engaging in water activities, especially in regions known for shark presence. The courage displayed by the surfer in driving himself to seek medical attention despite the traumatic experience is commendable. Authorities continue to monitor the situation and provide necessary alerts to ensure the safety of beachgoers and water sports enthusiasts in the area.
