Cracker Barrel CEO Julie Felss Masino recently addressed plummeting sales in response to the chain’s logo redesign controversy, acknowledging the need for more work to regain customer trust. The chain has witnessed a 5.7% decrease in revenue in the latest financial quarter, partly attributed to the backlash following the logo redesign.

During an investor call on Dec. 9 covering the financial quarter from Aug. 1 to Oct. 31, Masino acknowledged the challenges the company has faced in recent months. While some guests have appreciated the improved food and guest experience, she highlighted the importance of regaining the trust and confidence of those who have been slower to return.
The turmoil began when Cracker Barrel introduced a modernized logo in August, which omitted the familiar “Old Timer” image but retained the classic colour scheme. The change received criticism from customers, including a comment from President Donald Trump suggesting a return to the old logo for better publicity. Responding to feedback, the chain decided to keep the original logo, acknowledging guest sentiments.
Apart from the logo controversy, plans for restaurant remodels aimed at a more modern look were also suspended. The redesigns, which involved removing decor from the walls and closing attached stores, received backlash from loyal customers. Masino described this period as one of “heightened scrutiny” for the brand, acknowledging the need to rebuild trust with guests.
To reconnect with customers, Cracker Barrel has reintroduced popular menu items like Campfire Meals, Uncle Herschel’s breakfast, and chicken and rice. Additionally, in October, back-of-house staff received training on core classic and holiday recipes to enhance service quality. Masino emphasised the importance of brand and trust rebuilding efforts amid the sales opportunity that lies ahead.
In a Nov. 20 interview, Masino opened up about the public backlash, expressing her dedication to the brand despite feeling the intensity of criticism. Shareholders have shown their support for Masino, voting to retain her as CEO. The focus now turns to stabilising the brand, reaffirming its Americana roots, and reconnecting with the customer base to address the sales decline effectively.
Cracker Barrel’s leadership is committed to overcoming the challenges posed by the logo controversy and ensuring that customer confidence is restored. The chain’s dedication to providing quality service and embracing its Americana heritage remains central to its strategy for winning back the trust of its valued patrons.
Overall, Cracker Barrel’s response to the sales drop amidst the logo controversy reflects a strategic shift towards prioritising customer satisfaction and rebuilding trust. The chain’s efforts to address criticism, reintroduce fan-favourite menu items, and train staff demonstrate a commitment to enhancing the overall guest experience. As the company navigates through these challenges, its focus on reconnecting with customers and staying true to its brand identity will guide its journey towards regaining market confidence and loyalty.
