Renowned musician Joe Walsh, best known as the guitarist of The Eagles, recently unveiled a surprising anecdote from his childhood – his venture into learning Morse code. The revelation came as Walsh showcased items from his collection, “Life’s Been Good: Joe Walsh,” at The Troubadour in Los Angeles on December 8th. In an interview with Martin Nolan, founder of Julien’s Auctions, Walsh delved into the backstory behind some of the objects up for auction, including rare ham radio equipment that sparked his interest in the intricate world of Morse code.

Reflecting on his childhood, Walsh recounted a chance encounter with a man named Jim Walden, an avid ham radio operator. Fascinated by the radio equipment Walden shared with him, a young Walsh eagerly embraced the opportunity to learn Morse code. Describing a pivotal moment from that summer, Walsh remembered, “I studied Morse code, learned Morse code by myself and took the exam and got a license.” This newfound skill opened up a world of connections for Walsh, who vividly recalled engaging in Morse code conversations with individuals across 32 different states within a span of four months.

Throughout the auction preview event, Walsh emphasised the magic he found in ham radio and shortwave radio technologies. Expressing his dismay at the prevalence of discarding functional older equipment in favour of digital alternatives, Walsh highlighted the enduring value of traditional devices. The auction will feature a diverse array of items, such as a 1998 Eagles Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame induction-worn Moschino brick suit, a Barnstorm debut album, a stage-worn jacket from Ringo Starr’s All-Starr Band, and a prototype Duesenberg guitar bearing Walsh’s signature.
Beyond the glamour of the auction, Walsh’s philanthropic efforts take centre stage, with a portion of the proceeds designated to support VetsAid, a non-profit organisation he established in 2017. Committed to assisting veterans and raising awareness about their needs, Walsh expressed his deep conviction regarding the importance of honouring and caring for those who serve their country. “When they come home, I don’t think they get enough care. I don’t think they get enough attention. I don’t like that,” Walsh asserted, underscoring the vital role of supporting veterans in their transition back to civilian life.
Set to take place on December 16 and 17 at The Troubadour, the auction of Walsh’s collection promises to be a captivating event for music enthusiasts and philanthropic advocates alike. As Walsh continues to blend his musical legacy with charitable endeavours, his commitment to giving back and amplifying the voices of veterans stands as a testament to his enduring passion for making a positive impact in the world. Amidst the allure of rock memorabilia and musical history, Walsh’s dedication to supporting those who serve their country shines brightly, illuminating a path of compassion and solidarity for all to follow.
