Renowned principal dancer Sara Mearns has dedicated her life to the art of dance, culminating in her prestigious position with the New York City Ballet. From a tender age of 3, Mearns immersed herself in the world of dance at her mother’s behest, finding solace and passion in movement. As she reminisces about her journey, Mearns recalls the tears shed on her way to a dance studio in South Carolina, only to discover a sense of belonging once inside. Her early years were marked by exploration in various dance genres until, at the age of 12, she gravitated towards ballet, shaping her future path.

At 15, Mearns made the bold move to New York City to pursue formal training at the School of American Ballet, where her dedication saw her attending ballet performances nightly. Her commitment bore fruit when she secured an apprenticeship with the New York City Ballet and ultimately fulfilled her dream of gracing their stage. Mearns’ unwavering passion for ballet stemmed from her idolisation of esteemed dancers such as Jenifer Ringer, Wendy Whelan, and Natalia Makarova, acting as the driving force behind her ascent to principal dancer status in 2008.
However, Mearns’ illustrious career encountered a significant obstacle during a trip to Brazil in 2014, where she experienced sudden hearing loss following a rehearsal. The ensuing terror and confusion she faced propelled her to seek medical attention, leading to a diagnosis of nerve hearing loss in her low registers. Undeterred by the initial setback, Mearns soldiered on until the global health crisis in 2020 laid bare the extent of her hearing impairment.
The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic exposed the limitations imposed by the wearing of masks, impeding Mearns’ ability to discern conversations and music cues during rehearsals. The consequential impact on her professional life prompted feelings of fear and isolation as she grappled with the prospect of compromised performances. In a poignant moment of revelation, Mearns realised the pervasive influence of her hearing loss on her mental well-being and interpersonal relationships, culminating in a profound sense of loneliness and disconnection.
Taking charge of her health, Mearns embarked on a journey to find a solution to her hearing predicament, culminating in the acquisition of specialised hearing aids from Phonak. The transformative impact of the hearing aids was immediate, heralding a newfound sense of empowerment and clarity for Mearns. As she recounts the emotional moment of hearing previously unnoticed sounds with clarity, her narrative resonates with a poignant reminder of the beauty in rediscovering life’s nuances.
Embracing her regained hearing capabilities, Mearns reflects on the enhanced quality of her performances, marked by an enriched sensory experience on stage. The profound joy of connecting with music and fellow dancers underscores the invaluable role of technology in facilitating her artistic expression. As she prepares to enchant audiences in her upcoming portrayal of the Sugarplum Fairy in ‘The Nutcracker’, Mearns stands as a beacon of resilience and hope, inspiring others facing similar challenges to persevere and embrace their journeys with courage.
In her ambassadorial role for Phonak, Mearns seeks to share her story and offer solace to individuals navigating hearing loss, fostering a sense of community and empowerment. Driven by a desire to uplift and support others, Mearns envisions a future where obstacles are transformed into stepping stones for personal growth and artistic fulfilment. As she continues to grace the stage with her artistry and grace, Sara Mearns epitomises the indomitable spirit of a dancer transcending barriers to illuminate the world with her boundless talent and resilience.
