In a shocking turn of events, a Florida college senior, Constantine Demetriades, has recently been taken into custody after attempting to have 1,500 rounds of ammunition delivered to his dorm room. The discovery of the large ammunition shipment ultimately led campus officials and law enforcement to uncover an AR-15 rifle in his possession, which goes against the university’s strict policies.
Rollins College, a liberal arts institution located in Winter Park, Florida, was at the center of the incident which unfolded on Wednesday, December 3. Reports from FOX 35 Orlando, CBS affiliate WKMG, and ABC affiliate WFTV shed light on the alarming situation where Demetriades, a 21-year-old student, had the significant amount of 9mm ammunition delivered to the college.
Following the delivery, campus officials initiated an investigation, leading to a search of Demetriades’ individual room within the dormitory. The search resulted in the discovery of an unloaded AR-15 concealed under his bed in an unsecured black carrying case. Additionally, authorities found six magazines, with one loaded and five empty, further raising concerns about the student’s intentions.
The Winter Park Police Department and representatives from Rollins College have been tight-lipped about the specifics of the case, with no immediate response to requests for comments. However, it was reported that along with the rifle, a tactical vest, multiple knives, a security vest, ear protection, and a pistol storage case were found in the student’s possession.
According to the school’s strict regulations, any form of weapon is strictly prohibited within the residence halls, making the discovery of the AR-15 and associated items a severe violation of campus policies. Despite being aware of the campus regulations prohibiting firearms, Demetriades claimed ignorance of the illegality of possessing ammunition on school grounds, as per reports from FOX 35 Orlando.
In his defence, Demetriades explained to the authorities that he had previously transported the rifle to New Jersey over Thanksgiving and had returned to campus just a day prior to the discovery. He revealed that he held a valid conceal and carry permit in New Jersey, although acknowledging that this permit did not extend to Florida. The student maintained that he had no malicious intent and that he usually stored the firearm off-campus at a friend’s residence.
Upon his arrest, Demetriades was charged with possession of a firearm on school property and subsequently appeared in court for a hearing. Despite being deemed eligible for pre-trial release by the judge, he faces a student conduct process at Rollins College, where his presence on campus remains prohibited until the matter is resolved.
In response to the incident, a Rollins College spokesperson issued a statement emphasising the severity of the violation of their weapons policy. They assured that the college had promptly commenced an investigation upon being alerted of the breach and that the student had cooperated with authorities throughout the inquiry.
As the legal proceedings unfold and the college initiates its disciplinary action, the incident at Rollins College serves as a cautionary tale highlighting the consequences of violating campus regulations and the importance of adhering to stringent policies regarding firearms on educational premises.
The events surrounding Constantine Demetriades’ arrest have sparked discussions on campus security and the enforcement of strict weapons policies at educational institutions. It serves as a reminder of the responsibility individuals have in ensuring the safety and well-being of the educational community.
In light of this concerning development, both the college administration and local law enforcement agencies are expected to closely monitor the situation and ensure that appropriate measures are taken to maintain a secure and conducive campus environment for all students and staff members alike.
